Jack Straw's review on the lobbying of politicians has hit the news today - pharma is mentioned - surprise surprise - lets see what the fall out is and if any spills over to Europe.

Reply from another MEPs assistant

Dear Mr Davis,

Thank you for this message, which I will pass on to Andrew.

Normally there is relatively little scope for not implementing EU directives, although there may be some discretion in terms of how the legislation is implemented; however, this is now exclusively a matter for the UK government to decide, so I suggest that you contact your local MP to discuss this.

Yours sincerely,

My response

Thank you for your reply

However as I understand it the Directive is due to be scrutinised in the European Parliament on 25/2/13 where I assume my MEP would have a say and willing to voice concerns expressed by his constituents?

Please let me know if I have misunderstood the role of my MEP. I would have thought the Directive,as with many others is intrinsically illiberal, as well as based on flawed science and supported by those who stand to lose namely big Pharma and its powerful lobby groups. The sale of NRTs which have a statistical fail rate of 90-95% after 12 months are likely to decline as will the profits.

Ecigs have got me off the merry go round of smoking/NRT/smoking again. It is essentially daft to ban or effectively remove from nicotine users a delivery method demonstrably safer than inhaling burnt tobacco yet leaving cigarettes on sale. The 'quit or die' approach has failed.

Thank you

Gotcha clever dick ... new reply...

Yes, it appears that the legislation was tabled by the Commission on Dec 20th, rather than MEPs voting on it in Parliament. Please accept my apologies.

Assuming the proposals are being scrutinised in committee in the coming months, then Andrew will not get to vote on them until they reach the European Parliament; however, I will contact the relevant Lib Dem policy advisor on this committee and communicate your points to them. I will also share them with Andrew.

The liberal approach would be to look at the evidence and effectiveness of the policy proposal, and in this respect - without personally knowing the detailed background - you do make good points about the Commission's proposals.

Yours sincerely,

Kilian Bourke

Still waiting on my MEP's to reply only had one reply so far yet they don't officially return to office until the 7th so hears hoping

I'm still waiting but plan to use their UK offices.
I didn't get a reply from my MP either, not even an acknowledgement. But I found that WriteToThem is a voluntary organisation and the europarl.eu site is the place to go for more contact details.
ECCA have started an online Word template and they have a presentation at https://docs.google.com/presentatio...URkaGXQOJ2lST_zj3WFJ_1A/edit?pli=1#slide=id.p that would be a good reference for facts and ideas for letters.

I've had acknowledgement from three MEP's and my MP - if they've got anything to add to the thread, I'll post it up.

I've had a couple of acknowledgements too, will post up any relevant replies when / if I get them.

I'm late to the party, but my letters have now been sent to Charles Kennedy along with the Scottish MEPs. I'll come back with any replies...
