First DIY liquid has funny aftertaste.

I posted part of this in another thread but it won't let me post in the Mixology section so here goes-

I used to have one if the big standard cheap ecigs and used cheap blueberry liquid at 18mg nicotine. A 10ml bottle used to last me about a week and half.
I bought a Kangertech Subox Mini a week ago and I've been on Vampire Vapes 6mg Heisenberg liquid since then but a 10ml bottle doesn't last me. Is this due to the higher VG content and the higher power of the Subox Mini than what I was used to? A 10ml bottle only lasts me just over 2 days.
So I spent some time researching mixing my own.
When I bought my Subox Mini, the shop keeper gave a try of something like Heisenberg which was Vampire Vapes high VG stuff. It gave off a lot more vapour.
I tried my first mix today. VG, PG and Heisenberg Flavour Concentrate bought from Vampire Vape and VG nicotine 72mg from VapeInc.
I used eJuice Me Up for my calculations for a 20PG / 80VG / 6mg Nicotine / 20% Heisenberg Flavour Mix and this is what went into a 30ml bottle:

2.5ml VG Nicotine (72mg)
6ml PG
15.5ml VG
6ml VG Heisenberg Flavour

The increased vapor is there. The flavour is there but there's a weird taste that's hard to describe.

After spending a week with the Subox mini, I've found my favourite settings and I've always used Vampire Vapes Heisenberg 6mg since I bought it. I set it to the smallest hole and put it on 19w for mouth to lung with the 0.5 coil. For direct to lung, I set it to the biggest hole, 19w again and again with the 0.5 coil.

I made my 20/80 mixture as above but got the really weird taste after inhaling and before exhaling. It's not pleasant. It's a very dull taste not unlike burning. It's just strange.

After a while, I emptied my tank and made a 10ml 60/40 6mg mix. I didn't change the coil though. The weird taste was still there but not as bad after a while but still there. It's not very noticeable on mouth to lung but direct the lung it is stronger.

I emptied my tank again, wiped the coil and put some genuine 60/40 6mg Vampire Vape in it. The weird taste is still there. Same stronger taste on direct to lung.

I know more than 6mg nicotine is not advised. I'm sure I calculated it out correctly for 6mg.

I've ordered some new coils for delivery tomorrow so I'll try my 2nd batch the 60/40 6mg mix with a new coil tomorrow as my 1st batch the 20/80 6mg mix may still be soaked into the existing coil.

If I take the mouthpiece out and smell the top of the tank, I can actually smell the funny taste. I can also smell it if I put my nose to it as I press the power button.

I get the same funny taste at higher watts as well.

Does anyone have any other suggestions before I change the coil?

Is this fresh juice you have made or has it been steeped for a while ???
Most juice likes to be steeped for a good week or two but i'm unsure if the heisenberg can be ok fresh as i have never tried diy-ing it
or ever vaped it.

It was fresh juice. The flavour seems almost ok mouth to lung with small air hole but big air hole open and direct to lung, the flavour and coolness of the flavour is killed by the funny taste. The taste gets you at the upper back of your mouth, and almost at the back if the nose

I personally would chuck it in a nice warm dark draw/cupboard for at least a week with a good shaking every day and see if it mellows out any mate.
most juice i make i try to leave for at least 2-3 weeks before vaping.
Have a read up on steeping ejuice plenty of info on this site and google about it.
Sorry if that sounds vague as to the taste you have but it hard to say any more without trying or smelling it.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but when steeping do you take the lid off and store away for ages or leave the lid on? Not sure if its a stupid question as if the lid was off its open to dust and other particles causing contamination

i just leave the dripper part out of the bottle and leave the cap very loose but i'm sure others with a lot more experience than me will have
other ways

I've made another 10ml bottle up, this time ditching the nicotine. Ive got 4ml PG, 4ml VG and 2 ml Flavouring (PG) to give the 60/40 mix.
I've got some 0.5 OCC coils coming tomorrow. I took advantage of a company's 10 coils and 3 eliquids for £15 inc delivery offer. I can play about.
I'm going to take the tank apart, chuck the coil in the bin and give the tank a good thorough rinse. I'll put a new coil in, some of Vampire Vape's own premixed juice and try that. If the direct to lung taste goes back to as it was before, good. Then, I'll take it apart again, rinse it, replace the coil with another new one and try my own no nicotine mix mentioned above and see what that comes out like. If I get the same bitter taste as before, I'll leave it a week. At least that way, I'll know if its the nicotine affecting the flavour.
When I first put my 20/80 mix in, the flavour was very good, barely noticeable from the original and the clouds were a lot bigger than before but without the throat hit. It was after about 30 minutes later that the nasty taste appeared.
After ditching that for the premixed stuff about 1.30pm today, the same bitter taste is still present. Its strange that it took 30 mins for the taste to appear but after 8 hours of ditching that mix, the same (though not as strong) taste is still there. The clouds still appear bigger and thicker than before I put my DIY mix in too. I'm sat here, on 20w mouth to lung and its quite nice but switch to direct to lung and urghhh. Its like havinga sip of wine and doing that funny thing you do with your lips and tongue to get the taste of it.
As I say, I'll try new coils and cleaning tomorrow. I can afford to chuck 2,4 or even 4 in the bin whilst testing for what I paid for them.

I've just has a smell of the bottles I made earlier and I can smell the stuff I've been tasting in my mixes. I'll let them steep for a week to see how they go. In the meantime though, I suppose if I use a brand new coil with a clean tank, I may get to the bottom of it. I've got a 20/80 mix, 60/40 mix, a 60/40 mix with no nicotine. If I still have the funny taste on all 3 after cleaning the tank and using a new coil with each, I'll drop the concentrate from 20% down to 15 or 17 witha clean tank and a new coil. I should know by tomorrow or Sunday night anyway.

If your first mix was at 80vg are you sure you did not run the wick dry and burnt the wick and get a dry hit hence the taste your now getting ???.
Thats how i started mixing by doing a load of small different combo's (still do) until i found the one i liked, make sure you write everything
down for future refrence as its easy to forget how you done it in a weeks time and 10 difference mix's of the same flavour.
