Oh, don't get me wrong but I'm thinking that the device itself might not be great. I've given it to my friend to wick and he's a pro in this, it was better but nowhere near my expectations

Did he put the cotton ends thru the wick ports into the tank below?

On Avocado no, he just covered the wicking slots

OK, then as long as there's a little gap by each slot for the deck to flood a little when you tilt and drip back when level you should be pretty set. The bottom airflow is the better out of the two in my opinion. Side airflow is OK but the bottom is better. What coils you using?
