We, (Wales), won’t be out any time soon and we’ve been effectively on lockdown since prior to Christmas. Dripford has said today that he can’t see much changing on Friday and the next review date after that is 29/1.

Boris Johnson seems to have got the message. (See 2.39pm.) Downing Street has just announced that he is recalling parliament for Wednesday, and that he is making an TV address to the nation at 8pm tonight.

A No 10 spokesman said:

The spread of the new variant of Covid-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country.

The prime minister is clear that further steps must now be taken to arrest this rise and to protect the NHS and save lives.

He will set those out this evening.

Boris is in a tricky situation, of his own making. Starmer called it yesterday, Johnson wouldn't really have wanted to "go live" with an announcement today, essentially following Starmer's lead. It's easy for Starmer, he cant lose, but Boris and Co, well, they've not exactly called it right, since the start, given the resources and brains available to them.
