Scottish GPs call for a ban on vaping in public

Looking at the current figures* for smoking related diseases and deaths in Scotland, just under a quarter of the population (around 22-24%) smoke tobacco; add to that the facts that annually there are 56,000 hospital admissions for smoking related diseases and 13,000 people die from smoking related diseases each year. So why, with all the information now available on the efficacy of vaping in reducing and stopping tobacco use in smokers are they pushing for this?

If you are a member who lives in Scotland, please do approach your GP and tell them how vaping has been effective for you in giving up tobacco. You could tell them about any studies you have read (Dr Farsalinos) and how you know the ingredients in your e-liquids and are aware of safety issues related to safe use and storage, that you are able to control and maybe reduce your nicotine intake (self-titration). Without this sort of information from the actual users of Personal Vaping Devices/electronic cigarettes, very few of them will ever make any informed decisions on the future of our health as vapers.

Another infuriating article based on the same old non evidence. Is this kind of shit just designed to provoke a deliberate response in order to measure public reaction then ? Or what ?

Yes,though in this particular instance it would appear to have provoked a zero response as there's no comments left on the article.

All nicotine can be addictive. Vaping is unregulated and unlicensed. There is also no real evidence that long term nicotine use is seriously detrimental to health. There need to be ongoing studies into PG/VG exposure via inhalation/vaporisation - but this is unlikely to yield much in the short term- they've also been used in other products (albeit not inhaled) for a very long time.

The reality is that ecigarettes are marketed almost exclusively (if not exclusively) toward smokers looking to cease and desist- unlike tobacco products. Tobacco product manufacturers rely on the new uptake of smoking combustible carcinogenic sticks - of which purchase, although heavily taxed, is allowed across the entire of the UK. They are proven potent carcinogens, and the healthcare burden of these products is vast.

Vaping relies on those who realise the deadly reality of smoking, to stop smoking and take up vaping if they cannot use traditional NRT. There's a plethora of reasons for this - an addiction to cigarettes is habitual and not solely chemical.

It is unfair to complain that vaping/e-cigs promote the norm of smoking, when really they do the opposite when there is no current evidence based medicine to support that they are dangerous if sourced from a reliable vendor. I will concede however, that there is the potential for unregulated products to be slightly if not seriously detrimental to an individual's health - nicotine doses are not well controlled (and if they are, who knows?) plus there could be anything going into ejuices to the unwitting customer. From this angle, I support research and development into the field of vaping.

I have not seen one patient with a 'vaping-related-illness'. This could be to do with the time-span involved in the nature of any adverse event on the individual... HOWEVER...

If you do not cease and desist from smoking, you will probably die from smoking tobacco.
If NRT does not work with you, you are likely to relapse to smoking tobacco.
If you can stop smoking combustible tobacco at this moment in time by vaping PG/VG and as low amount of nicotine as suits you (as long as it is not a toxic level and it is a pure nicotine, sourced from a reliable and regulated source) then, quite probably, the health benefits outweigh the risks. This is providing there are no insidious/dangerous additives in your e-juices and your mods perform as intended.

There is no need to do another fucking study into PG as this chemical has been investigated since the 1940's and is a primary ingredient used in smoke machines for theatre and disco's where it HAS been tested for inhalation effects. PG is also used in hospital aircon units to prevent germs as it is has known germicidal benefits. Therefore, these people are uneducated morons. :(

Alas, such studies aren't related to direct and high volume content inhalation of PG and would be required for medical staff to have a direct and guided opinion on vaping.
