What's new

Spearmint custard no no no!

You'll probably find that most of the custard flavours out there are from a basic custard concentrate tweaked with extra flavours and additives like EM or Stevia, Extra vanilla, or cream, or egg

But there's no such thing as a basic custard - custard is made from a selection of flavours.

I can see myself careering towards another rant about pancakes in a bottle & frozen roast potatoes

This is true, but flavourings don't work like that, some base flavours just don't work, look at cherry - it's near impossible to find a "real" cherry flavour, plus some base flavours don't play well together so they create a compound flavour that simulates the final product, plus what would be the point in mixing several flavours together to create custard, a process of great trial and error when for the most part you can buy a basic custard flavour that works...

Bollocks! Looks like I'm going to have to buy some custard

Though I'm an awkward git - I'll probably have to try to make my own custard first

Problem is the flavourings we use are basically food additives, they are meant to increase the flavour of ingredient mixes so that they can be produced industrially, which is far different to home cooking, I know it should be possible to get all the flavouring together (egg yolks, milk, sugar, cream, vanilla - cornflour is meant to be neutral as a flavour in custards) blend them together and get the perfect custard, have you seen a milk flavouring?, How about egg yolks?

If it tasted of milk - I wouldn't want to vape it anyway

I'm a lactophobe

I'd have though a sweet, creamy vanilla would be pretty custardy

It's the egg that gives custard it's main flavour, followed by cream, sugar, vanilla & milk in that order - or at least as far as I remember...

but milk loses its distinctive flavour when it's heated to near boiling point, so surely a custard flavour wouldn't have a milk flavour in it, or it wouldn't taste of real custard
