What's new

Two million vapers might not be a good thing :(

I think they noticed a long time ago that's the real reason behind their eagerness to regulate Vaping out of existence!!!:wanker: That's for them not you by the way!!!

what they fail to mention is that smoking related illnesses cos the NHS over a Billion each year. so the revenue saved by people quitting smoking and taking up ecigs more than compensates the loss from tobacco sales.

They do say that the costs of dementia care, residential care and pensions are going to go through the roof because people are living longer.

thats a pretty weak argument from them. People are living longer due to better eating habits, better lifestyle, better medicines etc. and bears no connection to smoking or non smoking. in fact they even state that the level of smokers has remained a constant 30% for the last couple of decades yet the average lifespan has increased so it contradicts there claim of the rising costs of care which has zero to do with smoking habits.
in fact a recent survey shows Life expectancy around the world has risen dramatically, by 11 years for men and 12 years for women over the last four decades.
so if smoking has remained constant and life expectancy has risen it proves there claims as incorrect

I'm not sure about this. As a militant smoker I used to have fun with people who would tell me how much we smokers were costing the NHS. I then trotted out the figures for the NHS treatment vs tobacco tax revenue raised that year. The cost to the NHS was 1.9 billion and the tax raised was 13.3 billion. I then demanded a rebate from the non-smoker!

Tax revenue from tobacco in 2012/13 £2.6 billion in VAT
so though the figure is higher when you compare how much revenue is actually lost through vaping.
current UK figures from ASH put UK smokers at 10 Million.
vapers are at reported 2 million.. However this does NOT show how many smoke and Vape. that figure i cant find.
can only etsimate but you could say thats a 10% reduction in smoking so 10% revenue loss would if my maths is right 260 million.
saying that the figures for cost to NHS and smoking related stuff ( cleanups of cig butts and everything else is more like 5billion ) which would put loss of revenue to the government even lower.

Just think the whole matter is another govt ploy to try and dismiss ecigs because of how much money they would lose but when you weigh up the number of ECIG only users ( as opposed to those who vape and smoke) and how much they are costing the govt compared to how much the NHS is saving its probably not a huge amount of actuall loss.
when you consider smoking has droped from national avergae of 40% down to around 22% in the UK in the past 30-40 years ( long before ecigs come along) i dont think the loss of revenue can ever be used as a genuine excuse.

It's not just VAT though. CAsh gained through excise is £9.7 billion. I'm not 100% certain what excise actually is, but 10% of 9.7 billion is 970 million, and that's just as it stands now.

How about when another 2 million smokers are converted to vaping? or 10 million?

yeah the exicse duty is an odd one. but then as i say how many of those 2 million vapers still smoke as well.
and the more that quit smoking the bigger the NHS saving ( over 500 million a year just spent on clean ups of cig butts ! ) plus money lost through time of work due to smoking related conditions, the NHS savings etc etc etc. the difference between revenue gained and smoking costs is probably much much closer than we are led to belive.
