What's new

Well done Dr Chris Steele

I think what we have to remember is, as a TV medical presenter, he has to speak in simple terms, and not confuse the matter with specifics or fine details. IMHO he gave a balanced and clear view, in a way that would at least encourage smokers to look at vaping as an alternative. It also gave the speculating anti-vaping simpletons, something to think about.

I don't disagree that his little piece had positives and was a lot better than some of the more anti TV 'experts'. However what will be lost on the public is the bigger picture caught up I'm afraid in the 'specifics or fine details' which in short could lead to a de facto ban on every current device on the market, med regs through the back door, an inability to promote (as he did ) their use, requirements for 'leak proof' devices, inadequate mg strength limits, prohibition on describing flavours, future limits on flavours etc etc. Whilst suggesting ecigs will be a good thing he clearly has no understanding that their very existence on the shelves is in jeopardy with the current proposals.

He wouldn't need to go into detail but could have said that as the TPD stands....good as they are and useful as they may be in terms of THR...they're at risk

He is a massive anti-smoking campaigner (an ex-smoker if I remember right), as well as advocate of E-cigs etc. He's lectured all over the world in the last 30 years on quitting, NRT and E-cigs etc. But, there will be subjects he can't cover, and things he can't say on TV, thanks to ITV restrictions and contracts etc. Google his name, and you will soon see he knows way more than probably came across in the show ;-)

therein lies the problem.. public only see's whats been shown and NOT the truth

True, but at least what he's trying to show in the main stream media, is mainly a positive view. Most others are either saying nothing, sitting on the fence, or towing the Gov and EU line on this. He gave a common sense view, which was asthma inhaler chemical, flavour + nicotine vs cancer stick and 4600 harmful chemicals, likely to kill you faster. Even the most brain dead Jeremy Kyle guest would be able to work out what might be better for their health LMAO.

The way I see it.
While people like this are getting the true message/word out. People like us, need to make sure the right people have heard it, and hammer it home.

I think that's the right terminology.

It's the policy makers (ie; mps meps) we need to clobber with the over regulation side of things. Their the ones we need to convince that what is proposed will kill it. etc. etc.

Anyone able to post a link to Matts (gluggler) blog? It shows Skys Sunday news item up for what it actually was, Pfizer spokeswoman attacking the competition. I'd post it but don't know how on my phone.

The fact that he took a hit on an ecigarette will speak volumes to many, many people. Overall, this was a really good piece, and I hope the message starts to get out there.

Now, knowing a little bit about Dr Steele, I think he is a very good high profile medic to have in the side of vapers. He was responsible for getting NRT available on prescription. Good or bad, whatever our opinion is of NRT, he has constantly voiced support for e-cigs, and has done a lot of work in the smoking cessation field.

Here's some wikipedia information. Its quite interesting:

I agree with some of that but my feeling is he is on the side of medicinising ecigs. His work with NRT persuaded the powers that be that they should be regarded as drugs (previously anti smoking preparations, gum etc were not) and that smoking/nicotine/tobacco (often lumped together of course) dependency ought to be treated as a disease.

Whilst this may have helped NRT become available on the NHS I am not convinced it helps us as Vapers.

As a Vaper I don't consider myself to be ill and I use nicotine recreationally. I don't have a disease and I certainly don't want to have to go to the chemist/doctor/smoking clinic to buy a useless over priced medical ecig

Dr Steele is a familiar TV Doctor and it's nice to hear something positive for a change (unlike the annoying Jarvis and her antifreeze scaremongering for example) and I do see some positive things here. I will be interested to see how his advocacy develops. If you listen to what he says at the end about the coming regulation he refers to 'what's left ' will be safe and regulated. I wonder what he sees will be left after the TPD becomes law....
