Rossco Ell - thanks. I must admit have been finding the edges dull pretty quickly on it so I am fairly happy that the bulk of the shaping has been done to where I envisaged it. I may try and carve a few more dips and swoops along the top edges left and right as sanding is taking most of the detail out - then again I am no craftsman or wood worker and I only really wanted a piece I could sand, drill and use fairly quickly.

I have my Forstner and brad point bits at the ready and am thinking a sealing with tung oil might help the spalting and grain pop.

Honestly though, with how busy I am I just want to drill the thing and get my mods tidied away so I am having to learn patience - a skill I have never truly mastered

That's good of you mate but I'm happy for the power tools to take over that part. I have a power sander somewhere but lent it out - I find whittling and sanding therapeutic anyway so hand forming is fine by me
