Why did you quit?

Interesting replies, especially the ones who hadn't even planned to give up the fags, thanks guys.

breakbystealth: cheers mate, I'm getting there slowly

Glad to hear you are on the mend!

I have quit many times over the years using either NRT or cold turkey. Gave up for four years once when I had my kids. Always went back to them though. Used a cig-a-like about 3 years ago and thought it was an ingenious device but soon got fed up with constantly charging the batteries and ordering yet more cartridges. Decided back in the summer that I needed to give up again and went on a search for a better e-cig. Found POTV and have not touched a fag since August. Really, really happy to have found this place, the invaluable advice and the amazing new products on the market these days. Everything has moved on leaps and bounds since my first e-cig try-outs.
I never knew there was so many different flavoured e-liquids either. Amazing :)

The main reason I have always given up is because I want to live long enough to see my kids grow up and to be more healthy.

My kids are real proud of me too, which makes it so much easier to stay away from the old rollies.

The last time I attempted to give up was 1974.

Fast forward to September this year, and I was on holiday, and thoroughly enjoying it. The thought that if I could retire, I could be doing this every day crossed my mind. What was stopping me? The thought that I couldn't afford to retire while I was spending three grand a year on fags!

A few days before, I was outside one of our offices with a work colleague who was vaping while I smoked.

Then the lightbulb moment arrived.

Without saying anything to the rest of the family, I ordered an Evod starter kit from myepack. It arrived at 11:30 on 5th October, and since then, I've not had one fag.

:)

I'd always wanted to give up but never managed it with NRTs. Work shut down for just over a month and there was no pay so got myself a cheap starter kit to tide me over till work picked up ..... that was back in june and I've never gone back to ciggies!

I'd been smoking since I was 11, am 44 in a few weeks. I discovered vaping/ecigs while watching a film. Can't remember the name of it but Johnny Depp was using an ecig on a train. I never realised that they were just like smoking so I brought a cheap one just to see what it was like.
I liked what I found and liked it even more once I realised it was no more expensive than smoking.
I've never looked back since and the wife and kids are happy to encourage my vaping habit.

Have been smoke free for just over a year now and feel so much better for it :-)

Thanks for all the replies people, some really good reasons for quitting there, starting to get quite a mixed bag.

Money mostly. That and the country becoming so anti smoker. I wasn't bothered that the cough cough club hated me smoking, more that on the one hand I was being bombarded with how bad cigs were, yet at the same time the government was using smoking as a cash cow. Every time the the budget came out cigs were hit at ridiculously high figures. It wasn't 5 or 10 p a pack. It was 25-30p. It felt like someone had decided that cigs should go up in set percentages plus an extra levy and it was getting silly. 8.50 in a local shop for 20 was enough to finally kill it for me. All I could think was how much tax the government were taking out of that. Money for nothing on their part and treated like shit by them at the same time.

I chose vaping as a switch because I didn't want anything that felt like I was adding to the governments coffers on the back of something I used to enjoy. That and I found I actually like vaping.

on a spinoff, the fact I finally got so angry about being tipped off by the taxman has affected more than just cigs. I have always driven big petrol hungry cars, I don't do that many miles, so probably use a lot less fuel over a year than most 1 litre hacks. But breaking the cigs dependancy has also made me rethink my car. By this time next year (well, as soon as winter is out of the way as my car has winter tyres on in case of snow, so changing now would be daft) I am planning to ditch my 2.5 litre straight six and buy a smart roadster or a mini. Anything to get my road tax and insurance lower and solely to pay them less than I am paying now. I can't go as far as getting a pedal bike. I still need engines for a lot of different reasons.

I used to play golf online, often doing 24-40 hour sessions in my quest to level my characters as quickly as possible.A friend in the golf game mentioned he was using a cig-a-like and I mentioned them to my GF,we discussed my huge rolling tobacco habit(used to make 50 g last a month, now 2-4 days)and I was often waking her during the night asking her for money to go buy another pouch,we'd gone to put some fuel in the car one sunday night & she returned after paying for it and told me they stocked a disposable cig-a-like & would I like to try it.I agreed, and on returning home I started using it but its battery was dead before my GF was up next morning.I mentioned to a neighbour about them & he told me that I could buy rechargeable battery versions in various shops, the cartridges were cheapest in such n such shops so I decided to buy one & see how it went.I dropped from 50 grams per 2-4 days to 12 grams per week with it,as while its battery charged I smoked.I bought another one the following week,& a 50 gram pouch which sat unopened for a few days until I decided that having tobacco around was too tempting so smoked the baccy from saturday to tuesday night, went bed & next day was e-cigs.I then discovered eGo's & CE4's so got a couple, but the fecking fire buttons buggered up within days so I built a battery box from an old plastic baccy "tin" with the eGo's top push fitted through the top of the "tin" Battery power was initially from my flying model battery packs, then I cannibalised a couple of old laptops(dead)which gave me 14 of the 18650 batteries. These batteries are now used in my Vamo.

Over the many years of smoking,I'd quit many times but resumed a short while later(usually because I'd go out,get pissed & wake up next day with a packet of fags in my pocket)I always swore to quit completely if ever I was too unhealthy to continue walking my daughter to school,or the dog miles,or cycling etc but it eventually wasn't the ciggys that stopped me,it was the moronic standard of other drivers about here.TEN crashes later,my body said "fuck off" if I tried to do any exercise so being stuck inside all day,I smoked,& smoked,& smoked. If anybody said "smoking will kill you" I'd simply say "good,I fucking hate my life" but since taking up vaping,I've managed to climb a small fell in the summer with the GF & dog,I've more money in my pocket,my house doesn't smell like an ashtray, the saved cash means I can buy more fuel for the car so can always get away from this shit-hole estate for a few hours and my mental health has improved.(pity the years of fucking meds for the injuries has screwed my brain up so I suffer really bad short-term memory issues)

Smoked for 20 years, developed really really bad asthma to the point I needed my inhalers just to go up or down a flight of stairs, I couldn't play with my son, I couldn't live. Tried quitting many many times using every form of NRT including the pills, always went back to the fags within 2 weeks. Had a spam e-mail advertising e-cigs(not for the first time, been getting them for over 8 years!) and figured fuck it, tried everything else.. so I bought a cheapy cig-a-like from China, it tore up my throat to the point I was coughing up blood(very very dodgy Chinese knock off e-cig.. lesson learned there) threw it away the same day I got it and invested in a simple ego-t kit after lurking on the original UKV for a few hours. Within 6 months I was told I am no longer classed as asthmatic, so these days I can actually run(well..limp quickly with my bad knee and back!) and play with my son, and sometimes even catch the little git when he needs to be strangled ;)

And grats on being on the mend mate, my sister had hodgkins back in 2005, I saw it knock her for six but luckily she has been clear ever since except for one scare that ended up just being a cyst! Hope you get rid for good! :)
