Tonight, amid worrying signs that coronavirus cases are spreading to care homes, this programme can reveal that hospitals are again getting ready to rapidly discharge people with the virus into them.

One leading specialist has told us it could become “commonplace” in England this winter, despite the huge death toll the country has already experienced.

And we have seen a leaked contract from Greater Manchester’s Trafford Council – asking care homes to accept patients from hospitals who are Covid positive – as our correspondent Ciaran Jenkins now reports.

But this time round the care homes will know what they are getting so can equip for it.

If it were as simple as just protecting people in a specific age group, or those who are particularly vulnerable for some reason, then we wouldn’t already have fifty-odd thousand people dead.

Fifty-odd thousand people with an average age of 82... it's not as simple as that, but the numbers suggest that's where the focus should be surely? We can't totally protect everyone, it's impossible. So we need to protect those that are most likely to have a serious reaction to the virus.

We do the same thing with flu and flu vaccine, people over a certain age and others that are vulnerable get offered it, everyone else just gets a week in bed with paracetamol.

Food for thought & for the record I completely agree

Yes, agreed, that’s where the focus should be - the elderly and those with existing health conditions, e.g. cancer. I don’t know how we can stop them from getting the virus though? Those people can’t be held in some sort of bubble completely separate from everyone else, we tried that with the ‘shielding’ earlier in the year and failed. I don’t have the answers :sleepy:
