Addiction...

Is nicotine highly addictive? In my opinion YES. And that's exactly what it sez on the bottle!
Must be true..
You are free to believe what ever you wish. We can agree to disagree.
I used to believe nicotine was physically as addictive as heroin. But 50 years of scientific and anecdotal evidence has shown me otherwise.

A substance as addictive as HEROIN.

Absolutely, as a nurse with many years experience and now in a pharmacology role, you're right. Our perceptions cloud (excuse the pun) the impact of different addictions.

Heroin/diamorphone/morphine or any other opiate of this type is reletavily hard to obtain, is expensive and causes severe physical withdrawal symptoms, the pure cost of a habitual user knits together with the social issues such as being unemployed and unable to fund the habit, hence the negative social problems opiate addiction causes.

Nicotine has less physical withdrawals, but as I know, the general addictive properties are profound, but we have local access, few quids worth of tobacco is, what, a week worth of smoking? You don't need to have a large bank roll to feed it.

Substance addiction is complicated, physically and psychologically. Withdrawal from nicotine is harder than opiates pharmacologically (I can explain why if anyone is interested), more people fail to stop smoking than giving up opiates, because the patient tends to hit a shitty bottom of a pit with no way out so ends up in primary care, thus through a 'system', statistics mess thing up though as more people smoke than main line opiates.

You "BELIEVE". Fact is you have NO IDEA.

Having been addicted to both substances for over two decades AND having kicked both habits.... what you believe means squat to me.

With all due respect, of course!

Yeah, then why do never smokers who consume large doses of nicotine over long periods, not become addicted or show signs of withdrawal symptoms?

Well, well done to you, if I'm reading this correctly you've stopped using opiates and cigarettes?

It's amazing you speak about it openly.

I've said before in my posts, I'm a fucking charlatan, a allied health professional that smokes, that's worse that anything.

Godspeed to you mate, I hope you're well.

I'm sorry, I am trying really hard not to be rude here but the fact that you just asked me such a stupid question clearly demonstrates that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and I am wasting my breath.

And on that note... I am done.

Which 'smokers'?

You seem to have an odd perception.

Correct, I am clean. Not something I tend to discuss openly but the comments on here left me feeling little choice. Lot's of opinions expressed by people who, IMHO, have absolutely no idea!

Giving up either one is a real battle. Nothing to berate yourself over. Never give up giving up!

Good luck! If I can do it, anybody can!

Ah, now I get your post.

Nicotine has NEVER been suggested as physically addictive as opiates, so you've misread 50 years of scientific evidence, which is impressive, especially if you're less than fifty years of age.
