Being forced to vape in the smoking hut!

Thanks, Mad! In that case, I'd definitely be asking the boss whether asthma inhalers, aftershave and deodorant were also banned (or rather asking the union rep to). Okay, okay, inhalers are a medical necessity, but deodorant isn't, and frankly I find people who drench themselves in scent pretty obnoxious.

I work in a food factory so vaping indoors is a no no which I can fully understand. In my case there is a large smoking area (which I am told to use) in a quadrangle in the office block, it's big enough that the smoke doesn't bother me but if it did I'd be taking it up with my union rep ASAP...

From a legal point of view I imagine that your employers would have no case to answer. It's obviously up to them if they allow vaping within the workplace and up to you if you want to step into the smoking hut or not. Don't think they can be held liable for your decision to actually enter the smoking hut to vape, even though it sounds like your boss is a tosser :-)

If they permit smoking, yet effectively ban vaping by demanding that staff opt to passively smoke in order to vape, one could argue that the treatment of vapers is disproportionate, even compared to that of smokers.

An employer can ban any drinks with the exception of water, but most are more reasonable than that and permit tea/coffee/soft drinks etc (even if, like mine, they refuse to pay for it). However, would it be fair or reasonable to say that everyone who wished to drink green tea had to stand in a smoking zone to do so?
Do they have any reason to ban vaping in work time when they don't ban smoking (or coffee)? at the very least, staff who vape are being treated more unfairly than others who have different wants/needs that the employer currently meets.

I'm with Fleabag. They're demanding that you injure yourself to indulge a harmless* lifestyle choice. The bare minimum should be a separate, sheltered spot outside for vapers.

* That "no studies have proved" shit cuts both ways.

Not to derail the thread, but I'd be really interested to assess the politics on here. It's pretty unusual on the internet to mention unions without somebody going boo hiss. Does vaping make you a lefty? Discuss :P

It was stated on local news the other day that there are now over 1.3million users of liquid nicotine. Maybe it's time to gather the forces and March on Whitehall

There were 1.3 million vapers when I started on my eGo set 7 months ago - I think an updated estimate of 1.5 million has been touted, but that's probably out of date now as well

I can vape as much as I like at work,in fact the boss positively encourages it,but then working in a B&M vape store does have it's advantages.

Nope, I'm a Psychiatric nurse, work at the big Psych hospital in Brislington.. not the sort of place you want to be hanging around at 3 in the morning on your own! :assassin::eeek:

yeah i totally agree, i lived in bris and its no fun ;) but on a more serious note i vape with the smokers as they all like the vamo and some are talking or stopping now... its the small victory's of helping others on this one for me. i do agree with the good people here you should have the right to not passive smoke and be treated like a smoker too to be fair

Update: The health and safety guy in work is an ignorant moron and I've told him to his face. He think vaping is the same as smoking. I'll be taking this up the management chain.
