What's new

Being forced to vape in the smoking hut!

Let's put it this way. If the government gets things the way it wants, and ecigs end up as medicinal products (heaven forbid!), then you would be perfectly within your rights to use your "medicine" wherever you needed to, at work in an office, in the armed forces, in the hospital, anywhere at all. So one way or the other your boss is going to end up allowing you to vape indoors and may as well start to get used to it. Either as you "using your medicine" or as a result of someone taking an employer succesfully to a tribunal, vaping indoors will one day become a reality, i just pray it's not through med's regs.

My boss is actually quite understanding to my vaping. I'm certain that if I asked him he'd let me vape while I worked but I chose not to ask him as it'd end up costing me the same if not more than smoking tobacco. So I just have a few puffs whenever I feel the need in the toilet and a laugh at all the smokers stood out in the wind and rain.

I looks like I've made enough noise at work. Health and safety guy brought it up in the last safety meeting and it looks like I'll be getting my very own vaping shelter. I'm not expecting it to happen anytime soon but it's progress.

That's sort of good news, but arent they really missing the point?

Im the only vaper in my workplace. All the smokers work in the factory and im in the office. I have a tw titan tank kept in my pocket for stealth vaping and pop into the loo when I need a few puffs.

I keep my other mods on my desk and will take the odd few puffs when there is no one else about.

I go outside at lunch but can keep away from the smokers as there is no designated smoking area.

Im happy with my current routine and im not going to draw attention by trying to get the boss to agree to vaping indoors.

I think a lot of it is ignorance, non smokers see vapour and think its smoke so therefore still class it as smoking without looking at the facts

Quite a few places seem to be forcing vapers to use facilities originally provided for smokers and as a result, exposing them to 'second hand smoke'.

If it's accepted that passive smoking is harmful to health, then by forcing vapers to inhale passive smoke, an employer (for example) could be (potentialy) forcing an employee to inhale a harmful substance and leave themselves open to legal action for harming the health of that employee (in theory).

It's a bit 'thin' to suggest that SHS would definitely cause health problems for those forced to be exposed to it (particularly if it occurs in an officially approved smoking shelter that's open on 3 sides) but living in the compensation culture, with no win no fee, asking an employer to sign a document that states they are aware that they are forcing someone to inhale SHS and that SHS is recognised as being harmful, might just give them pause for thought.

If they refuse to sign a document that basically acknowledges that they could (potentially) be liable by forcing vapers into SHS, then ask them if they're afraid of providing evidence that could be used against them if the vaper decided to sue for damage caused?

That's also a bit 'thin' but it might just make the employer think twice if they think they may end up having to go to court and pay compensation?

+1 on most of the advice given. And my tuppence worth? Absolutely refuse to vape in the smoking area, please. We cannot afford to be pushed into being "like smokers". We have to carve our own identity as neither smokers or non smokers or jugglers, fishermen or banana pickers. We vape, which isn't "like smoking", it's something entirely different and should be treated as such.

This is spot on, we should have our own identity, we are neither one or the other, we are vapers!!

I think I am quite lucky that my manager allows me to vape at my desk.
I did not ask if I was allowed I just did it.
When people come into the office I explain what I am doing and they are very reasonable.
They often get a slight hint of what I am vaping in the air and all say it is nice then we get into a discussion of what flavours I have and I try to educate all on the benefits.

This seems to be a growing problem not helped by the bad press who only try to stir things up I watched a video on the tube recently and everywhere is trying to bring in a law to ban vaping in public places not because they think its dangerous but because they cannot distinguish real cigarettes from e- cigs the best thing that could happen in the vaping community is if will all moved away from the e-cigs that look like cigarettes and then maybe we would have some argument because trying to educate the public that do not smoke if the first place that what we do is safe to them is going to take a lot of time and we need to report bad sellers who sell to minors its not good at the moment for vapers and if the powers that be get thier way it will all go underground look what has happened in Australia they stopped branding on cigarettes and its not worked more minors have started smoking since the ban . all I can recommend is start stealthing.
