Coils Coils and Coils

Ok so quick panic this morning old coil not great in taste but after using on off for about 6 weeks who can quibble about it lol.
Had to through on together before I went to work. So me being me why not try something easy but New.

Here’s a simple 14 wrap 2mm iD Ni80 28 gauge dual coil set up. Wick was a bit tricky pulling through ( just hope there’s not to much bottle neck ) as you can see I like a lot of wick and I probably would have put abit more in had I of been thinking straight.

Nice!
I bought some kanthal Clapton flat yesterday (couldn’t tell you more than that, at work)
Five winds, 3mm bore, separated the coils slightly. Dry burned it, lovely even burn, wicked it, flooded the cotton and coil with juice (my own pear drops that has steeped for a week) HOLY CRAP! The stuff was coming out the chimney like a flame thrower!!! Luckily I didn’t burn my self!
Fired it again, looking down into the chimney, and yep, flames!
Took it apart, checked the coil, all looked fine except one leg of one of the coils was black. Soaked it and fired it up with out the tank/chimney on, it was EVIL! Like it was possessed! Spitting angry hot juice everywhere......so, I ripped them out, shoved em in the bin, and made some standard wire coils.

Any ideas what went wrong?

That's a new one on me, never had one go full fire vefore I don't know if @jester81 has any experience with it. I will try and do some research see if I come up with something.

And my first home made Clapton, a 22 core with a 32 wrap all in kathal a1 pretty happy with the way it came out.

Hi doobiesnax

Well well done for cracking on with it. I’d say you had a hot leg. Was the coil anywhere near the side of the tank. I know I have to build micro size coils in one of mine as the build area is bloody tiny. I’ve had mine go up a couple of times, when investigating I saw that the coil would dry the wick out to quick and then there would be a dry spot, which of course would set alight.

Ok as for Clapton flat I would be inclined to set the wattage low low to start with. I tend to run mine at 78W but will always fire it up when I’m happy with the look at about 20W and increase 5W at a time till I get the glow at the speed I enjoy vaping at. There really is not any point of vaping at 120W if you get the same hit from say 48W. I know that sounds silly but your now changing your coil type and wire so you have to remember it not a standard coil setup.

Juice spitting is the high wattage your get a little when you fire it but again down to wattage mate. Don’t be put off we learn from our mistakes just be safe. If your not happy with anything then don’t use it.

Always be safe test test and re test

Very nice mark big thumbs up mate.

Just a reminder I see your dual coil - ing, remember that it halved the ohm so if you build a 6 wrap coil @ 1.2 ohm X2 the ohms on your unit will see it @ 0.6ohm

I have no idea if the coil was touching the side of the tank, I guess it’s possible, certainly was pretty violent, it reminded me of those flameles modern cigarette lighters, made the same sort of noise to! I’ll certainly give it another go at a later date. I now have a new mod which is offering such great flavour with just standard wire, I think I’ll leave it until I need to change them tbh after that hahaha.

I will definitely follow your advice and go for a lower wattage at first until it’s bedded in, and will let you know how I get on!

Thanks for your reply and advice.

Thanks jester,
I am running a mix of single coil, dual coil, triple coil, I'm actually thinking about a quad coil setup in my peerless just as an experiment. I'm quite familiar with ohms so I will keep an eye on resistance, but that's a very good point especially for people with mech mods you need to be careful with coils and resistance otherwise batterys could blow and that's not fun for anyone. But I always check mine with a meter and work out what mine will be mounted plus I run a regulated mod too. Its not a guaranteed safe thing but its pretty good.

Got bored and looked up a fishtail braid, I'm not that happy with the way it came out but if you don't admit the little issues you have on the way you can't relish in the success, going to try keep at it it though but i like a vertebraid too so I might give that a go

Ok well it may not look so pretty but it vapes well, awesome flavour and good cloud, just for information it's a fishtail braid of 28 kanthal a1, 3 double strand, wrapped at 2.5 Id at 5 wraps, it's . 23 ohm, I should have gone ni80 but I'm waiting for wire, but even so I like the way it vapes. Strong solid flavour, not a massive throat hit but its there.
