Fuck apple

i agree with some of this. i have a few macbooks in the house, one that was purchased in 2007 or 2008 had various hardware problems. screen failures, the keyboard, hard drive failed. i took it to the apple store each time and they fixed it in a couple of days with no question, even the second screen failure after it was out of warranty, when i explained it had previously failed in the same way. but still, it’s disappointing.

i have another from 2008 that hasn’t had any problems at all and still works and gets a bit of use.

the one i mostly use is from 2012 and it runs better now than it did when i bought it after putting a solid state drive in it a few months ago.

i also had a grey g4 tower that i bough round about 2000 which is still being used for graphic design stuff by the guy i sold it to and still runs surprisingly well after 20 years. it’s never needed any repairs other than upgrading memory.

i think there have been shit batches of products since they became so massive that they haven’t always dealt with very well (although sometimes they seem to do), which is definitely a major slip for them, their customer service used to be excellent. and i think it is still comparatively good.

but there are other factors. my wife’s pc laptop is about the same age as mine and has higher spec components yet the operating system is a bloated mess. it’s a useless pile of shit. it ties itself in knots trying to start up and can’t shut down properly. the same happens periodically to the various relatively new laptops we have in the office and we need to get the it guy out to sort them out. apple are far better in the sense that you can buy a computer and never really have to do any maintenance, not need to bother with anti virus or any of that stuff and ten years later it will still be very useable. i’ve not had the same experience with windows computers (wife’s laptop, equipment at work) at all.

as for phones and tablets, i just prefer the interface. can’t deal with android personally, although there are some decent android phones.

but anyway, fuck them. :D
I think it's important to differentiate the tech from the OS. I'm a unix nerd, I love me a bit of Linux, and I used to rate MacOS - but it's inferior to Win10 in performance now, imo. It also depends on the clutter on the hard drive - if your wife is anything like mine, I cry when I look at how she keeps it all in order. Anybody with more than one icon on the desktop needs their computer pulverising to tiny pieces :D

see, my hard drive is a cluttered mess. desktop strewn with files. but somehow it still works ok :D

you will no doubt know more about this than me but it seems to me os x works in a way that stops the hard drive getting in a mess, but windows doesn’t. maybe windows 10 is better at this, the surface pro i have in front of me at the minute is probably not old enough for me to know.

Had to look that one up lol

i’ve never understood the computer platform contention that you see sometimes. “windows is a bastard!” “apple sucks!” etc.

Sure, it used to be, but components have been substandard compared to other manufacturers for a while now. Then tag on design flaws and you've got yourself a bit of a shitshow going on.

My new MBP's keyboard is beyond shite thanks to the butterfly key design in the drive to make books thinner. This was an issue known to Apple from the first iteration, yet this is three iterations in and it's still a problem.

And don't get me started on customer service. But you have, so I'm going to rant on :D

I spent around 6 hours speaking to CS departments around the damn world to get my MBP sorted. My treatment was shockingly bad. Worse, ultimately, nobody would action the repair. It took me resorting to ranting to a "Genius" [*they aren't geniuses] in store and making a total scene. That's not what I paid £1450 for.

Then there's the planned obsolescence of old models, software updates configured to make old items operate inferiorly in order to prompt new acquisitions, restrictive constraints placed on software devs...it goes on.

My Asus Predator has been flawless on the other hand and beats the Macbook specs hands down in every sense.

A lot of me is now locked in to the Apple environment, but I'm far from convinced that this is because of the "quality" on offer. The next time I'm upgrading my phone and tablet I'm almost convinced I'll not be buying from the Big A any longer.
I have the latest MBP 2020 version ... no issues anywhere so far!

you are correct in what you said later - it’s OSX for me I live it - windows is a mess and always has been

windows 10 may be better I’ve not used it - I have absolutely no intent of doing so tho

I also do t get on with the android platform
