Is SS316L still the go to wire for both standard builds and TC?

Hello everyone, from my other thread you may have gathered why I have been inactive for so long, but now I am on the mend I want to get back into my DIY coils and Eliquids. I am a bit fed up with paying for coils for my voopoo drag X, so will be using some of my other mods.

The last time I was really building, SS316L was about the best wire for both building standard coils for mechs and standard watt setting on mods, but also was great for temperature control on my DNA200's and other mods that supported it, especially the joyetech mods that could run the arctic fox custom firmware.

I am not planning on building anything crazy to begin with, just standard coils so would likely order a long spool of 26 gauge, then I can build coils for RDA's for my mechs and RTA's for my TC mods.

Where I have been out of the loop for so long though, is SS316L still the wire to go too for this, or has another type of wire that works better came along?

Thank you all for your help, Conan.

For TC, SS316L. For Wattage, I’d use Ni80, but that’s me…
Any reason to go for Ni80 over SS316L for standard watt mode? And whats it like resistance wise, like does it read in Ohms lower than SS316L or higher for the same gauge and number of wraps?

For wattage mode I only use Ni80 I like the flavour and the coils hold up better over time, with cleaning.
For mechs also Ni80 as the resistance doesnt change with heat.
I dont do temp control so cant advise that.

I agree with MTB, you're dealing with one resistance with Ni80. As far as resistance, you'll get a higher resistance with Ni80, I believe.

It seems like for Ni80 I would need to get 24 Gauge, this would give me a wrap count of 7 and a half round a 2MM bit to get me to 0.4 Ohms, which should be a nice vape on a mech mod?

OK, I will likely get both SS316L for TC and try out some Ni80 for my mechs.
Using steam engine it looks like I will likely need 24 Gauge Ni80 to build a 2MM single coil at 0.4 Ohms which should have a nice heat flux?

I’d probably go for a 3mm with less wraps, 2mm is a bit small (in the RTA/RDA’s I use). But vaping is subjective, so you need to find what works for you :)

Do you know what, you are right- my memory is a bit hazy but I don't remember making coils under 2.5MM now that you mention it. I did make small coils for a smaller RDA I have, well I actually have 3, they are very short in height and with the cap on don't take up much room so are great for smaller mech setups.
Hmm I have never tried flatwire/brochrome, why not give it a try, I have nothing to lose! Also stealthvape, ahh that brings back memories! I was constantly ordering different wire types from there for TC, I believe my first roll of Ni200 was from there.
