I've got my kayfun and been trying to get it setup most of the day.

But I don't know what I'm doing wrong. To little cotton, to much. But the taste just doesn't seem right. I'm not sure I can describe it, I guess it's almost like a metallicy? taste. Or is this just the cotton not wicking right?

I have watched soo many builds on youtube but its hard to judge how much cotton they are using.

Got a microcoil in there at 1.2 ohms. Could it be that this is less ohms then I am used to. I think it's normally 1.8 and higher on my prebuilt ones. Or would this have absolutely nothing to do with it?

Any help or advice would be very welcome.

I think I know what you mean...

Are you pulsing the coil at full wattage/voltage? I used to do it a couple if times, reassemble and go, and there was a taste for a while. Now I pulse it at 20W until any smell is no longer.

However, I use silica and 3.0ohm coils, so I might be of no use whatsoever. :D

GROOF what gauge of wire are you using?

My typical build is 7/8 wraps of 0.30mm silica around a 2.2mm screwdriver. I find that this gauge or above will keep a reasonable shape without torching beforehand. Then I heat the coil until glowing and pinch together until it is more or less all touching but not overlapping. Make sure you don't fire and squeeze at the same time or you will short.

If you are using cotton, remember less is more. General rule of thumb is that it should move freely once you have threaded it. Cotton swells massively when you add liquid.

Put the bottom section of the chimney on leaving the excess cotton poking out of the top. Trim to about 5mm above the chimney and push down.

Not had any dry hots or off tastes this way.

Stick with it. When you get there you will realise why it is worth the effort.

Probably the best thing to do is start over, Aim for about 1.8 if you are using a VV/VW mod or if using a mech the resistance of your choice but I find 1.8 works for everything in a Kayfun.
I use a 2.54mm screwdriver shaft and wrap a microcoil with pre torched .30 Kanthal. Fix your coil directly under the screws don't use the holes and set your coil to sit 1-1.5mm above the air hole and as centered as possible. Once it's mounted do the heat and squeeze bit so that you get a nice compact shape without any overlaps.

Now take your cotton and stretch the lump / pleat out into a sausage shape, it should be about one and a half times the size of your coils hole (at least as a starting guide- experience will soon give you the right size) but not pulled tight. Now twist one end to a point and thread it through, You'll know you've got too much if it starts to pull at the coil as you thread. Keep pulling it until you get a similar thickness of cotton on either side of the coil, now lay the cotton flat down the sides of the deck and use small sharp scissors to cut the cotton off level with the step of the deck. Use a little E-liquid to "glue" the cotton to the sides of the deck by wetting it, and arrange it so it doesn't block the channel. give all the cotton a good dose of juice (If you've got the cotton right you should have little "Shoulders" of cotton that stick up about 1mm above the coil), screw on the chimney and take a quick vape using the chimney as a mouthpiece. You should be able to catch any odd taste or blockages at this point before you fill up. If it's ok button up and fill 'er up...

Coils constructed in this method will last upwards of 2 months - replace the coil when half of its surface still looks rough and black after a dry burn...
Wicks will last as long as they last! using TW Raspberry Menthol I can get 3 weeks or so, about 8 to 12 tanks but some juice will cack up a wick before you finish a second tank...

There you go... The undiluted wisdom of The Tubby One...:lol1:

Did you give it a really good wash in soapy water before you used it? There's nearly always traces of machine oil and it will make your vape taste absolutely foul.

Thanks for all the help and info guys.

I'll take all that onboard and give it another go tomorrow morning and see what happens.

I really do want to stick with it and get a simple build that I can do quickly. I have another kfl coming from ft sometime in the future, so maybe by the the time that arrives I'll be an expert at it.

And yes I did give it a good wash before starting :)

Quick update:

I got to work this morning and thought I'd try and follow Tubbyengineer's instructions as it looked pretty detailed and a good step by step, and all is good. I do have to work out how many coils equals what. I got 1.6 using .28 wire wrapped around a 2.5 drill bit. I didn't torch the wire as I don't have a torch (does this make alot of difference, and what is the idea of torching as I have no idea?).

Anyway I got it done. Got the wire wrapped around the screw. Is there a good way to do this as when I do it the wire kept popping out from under the screw head? Then got her fired up and no weird taste.

My only real problem was one I filled it up half the juice seemed to come out the air hole at the bottom but I'm guessing that this was because I filled it up before I put the top cap on and then turned it upside down. I also think it could have been me not filling very carefully as I used the bottle I emptied the juice from the kfl before I rebuilt, and this didn't have a nipple top on it and I could've inadvertently tipped some down the middle.

So really I would say a success. Certainly alot better than my attempts yesterday so thank you to everyone who replied yesterday and especially tubbyengineer who has probably written that quick guide so many times he can do it with his eyes closed.

I dont have a torch, but I do connect one wire to the kayfun and just use a lighter on the coil til its glowing, and pinch it gently with tweezers to get the coil tighter. Firing the coil prior to making it helps stiffen it and removes the...umm...sproingyness :P of it. It deffo helps making the coil stay where it is supposed to be.

Cover the air hole with your entire hand when filling from the top, screw the top cap on gently until it reaches the oring, flip it and finish screwing it on tight

I normally blow out any excess e-liquid through the top gently, then take a vape...through the air hole :P

This video is really helpful http://www.planetofthevapes.co.uk/f...-only_93/37233-how-to-build-a-kayfun-rba.html

Thanks KMS

Think I'll have to go and buy a lighter. Haven't had one of those around since I stopped smoking.

I remember those turbo ones, that would prob be good for torching.

You can pick up a reasonable little chefs torch for about £10, or if you want to take a bit of a punt on quality there are "Pencil" torches from £5
