Raguri Rant - Sub Ohming and Newbies.

ive said it before and will say it again the youngsters like to blow big clouds.

the vaping companies know this and also know without youngsters taking up vaping their companies wont be around for long,x smokers looking for something safer will only be around for so long after all.

Raguri - To become an Official ranter you will need the following

Straggly Beard
Mad Swivelling eyes
Hand lettered cardboard signs
Zero personal hygiene
A bottle of super strong chemical based cider.

Once you have these all you need is a handy street corner.

So all he needs is a sheet of cardboard /black marker/ flaggon of diamond white ....voila. Oh and a street corner :D

Right then, this is a topic that I keep seeing, and I did say a while ago I would voice my opinions on this matter.

Sub Ohming... And Newbies.

Recently, we have seen a massive influx of products designed specifically for sub ohming at a relatively inexpensive price. Things such as the Joyetech Ego One, the Aspire CF SubOhm, the Eleaf series, etc etc.

Now, as you will probably know, I am a sub ohmer. I like it, I push the limits of stuff, and I enjoy it.
BUT
I have the knowledge to do it safely. Sure, I build stupid stuff for the hell of it, but, I know the risks, i know what could go wrong, and I know what happens when it does...

So, where is this going exactly?
To here.
I fucking hate this new sub ohm market. New vapers should not have these things available to them in my opinion. Hopefully I will find people here who agree.
Sub ohming can be really, really dangerous. I have seen three posts on various facebook groups in less than two days asking "Are these batteries safe as they got warm?" or "I've taken these out of my laptop and I've already used them and they work but are they safe?"
Sure, this isn't exactly a rip on the battery side of things, BUT there's always a fucking subtank or atlantis ontop of whatever they are asking about.

These products have normalised sub ohming.

I hate that.

Sub ohming used to be about having a decent amount of skill, and being able to build something YOU were proud of. These new clearos are just making people think it's normal. Hell, I even saw a post about a guy who bought an ego one and tank AS HIS FIRST SETUP and didn't know it had to be charged before using it...

I'm sorry, but to me that's bloody worrying!

/Rant

Sod it. I'll add a bit more.

DEAR WORLD, DO NOT BUY A BLOODY MECH AND A DRIPPER AS YOUR FIRST SETUP EITHER!
If you do, learn everything first. I am amazed at how many times I've seen "How many wraps of x wire to be safe?"
Ie, They don't own an ohm reader, have no idea about their batteries limitations, etc etc.

DO NOT USE ICR BATTERIES
Simple really, DONT FUCKING USE THEM! If you want to know why, look up an ICR short. It's nasty.

DO ASK QUESTIONS! BEFORE BUYING SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS EVEN THOUGH THEY'VE BEEN VAPING FOR MUCH, MUCH, MUCH LONGER THAN YOU!

And last but not least... For now.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT RISK IT.
I've had batteries enter thermal runaway on me, it is not fun, and it makes your mind so full of scenarios, you end up just holding the bloody thing.
anyone who thinks they will instantly throw it, you're wrong. You don't. You stand there like a rabbit in headlights going "Heeeeerp deeeerp What do I want for Dinner?... Oh yeah... I have that in the freezer... Why is my hand hot?"...

I very much agree with you that it's risky for the inexperienced to push the envelope with minimal knowledge and ignorance of the possible repercussions if things go wrong.

That said, we were all new to vaping at one time and we all learned as we went along. Having more experienced vapers to help in the learning process is an absolute godsend and I'd urge anyone thinking of sub ohming for the first time to draw from the ample well of knowledge we have available to us here in the planet.

But just to play devil's advocate, I remember a certain erm... bittervet on the original UKV predicting disaster when people started drifting down to 1.8/1.5 ohm cartos and using VV devices. He maintained that 3.7 v and a 3ohm atty/cart was good enough for anybody.

It's fairly obvious that doesn't cut the mustard for some folk and the only really important point (in my mind anyway) is what actually does cut the mustard for person using the set up and keeps them off tobacco.

I applaud you for caring enough to share your views and I agree with a lot of what you have to say, but I think if someone is willing to take risks and accept responsibility for their own actions then they should be free to do so. The trouble with that though is knowing what the actual risks are.

A mitigation/education strategy would do a lot to alleviate fears of potential disaster. Mitigate possible issues by educating new users.

Vendors can play a big part in this by making sure they explain that sub ohming is fairly advanced compared to say, an ego/evod set up and by maybe trying to provide a crib sheet of basic safety info about shorts, suitable batteries etc. Forums like POTV can offer a wealth of knowledge and experience and new users should be encouraged to ask if they're unsure about anything (just don't ask me..that'd be like the mentally deficient leading the blind ;) ).

But not everyone uses forums/facebook/whatever and so won't have that guidance to call on. That's where basic crib sheets might prove useful (I don't want to nominate you for something that you don't particularly want lumbering with, but have you considered composing something like this and making it available to download? Might come in handy for B&M vendors?).

Your concern about new vapers is commendable but a simple analogy with children springs to mind : you can't wrap them up in cotton wool all their lives.. although with new vapers, I suppose you could teach them how to wick with it. ;)

I'm with Raguri with this one. I've heard of market stall vendors sending first time vapers away with a CF and an Atlantis setups. The poor fuckers don't even know how to fill the things with liquid, never mind the pitfalls and safety considerations of sub ohm vaping.

There's a learning curve to vaping that most here have experienced to some extent, the accessibility of these device to new starters bypass's this important education. I fear it's not going to end well.

Doesn't matter if it's vaping kite buggying caring for my chameleon riding my trials bike or building a house. I research a lot before and during whatever hobby takes my fancy.
Been vaping on and off for 3 years. Exclusively since May with a decent vv mod and tank. Few weeks In and I started reading about mechs Rdas and rtas and spent some time reading up. Decided to stick with reg mods as they suit my needs. I have always bought good quality batteries that are more than adequate for my needs and build coils that allow headroom.
My builds vary from 1.8 down to a low of 0.4 dual coil rda and I see no reason for me to venture lower. I've got no interest in chasing clouds just good flavour.

My wife was out in a café with the kiddies the other day and a chaps there with his dripper clouding out the whole place with no regard for the other customers. This is what I would say is the worst part of cloud chasing becoming so popular. Blow big clouds at home by all means but leave the big guns at home if your out in public.

Raguri I could not have put it better myself. Sub ohming has well and truly entered the mainstream and opened up a whole new world of shit. Guess it is seen to be cool and 'edgy' these days. No it's not it's fucking dangerous in the hands of the uneducated

I respect and agree. By sub ohm how low do u mean, 0.1/0.2?

By my second week of vaping I knew it was for me. I wanted more than a protank could offer. I got a mech and RDA after only 3weeks vaping. So much other stuff too. Then spent the next week working out what to do with it, safely. A lot of what I know I read here and the members on here are a credit to POTV.

Not all noobs are the same and i agree that subtanks and the like are asking for trouble. I myself dont want one and dont really see the point in one. I know my limits, i'm not ready to go below 0.3.

It is good that you have done the right thing in learning your ohms law and how to use it.
Many people do and vape safely.
Unfortunately Raguri's rant is required because many do not do the learning and do not have a clue that they are doing things that have possible dangers.

And this is why it's worked for you.
It's the total lack of knowledge I find scary.
Which I have found recently, is usually due to them being "Thrown in at the deep end" by the 'newest and best' stuff.
Hell, I Started out on a Vamo, I'm hardly one to talk as back then that was the best mod to own unless you spent silly silly money.
BUT
At least that was sensible. Huge, but sensible.

Even a 0.5 ohm Atlantis with the wrong battery could end horribly. All it takes is for someone to get hold of a mech, and a naff battery and it's the next headline :/ ...
