I've always been using the Scottish roll without fail but I think it's more that the rewicking you did just fits the aromamizer more, hence it works better.
My opinion on the Scottish roll is that it helps breaking up clumps in the cotton and likely creates more regular channels for juice to go through. Years ago I'd contemplate using the same weight cotton just stuffed in a coil and Scottish rolled, then soak each with juice and do an experiment of a) how much does each wick weigh (ie how much juice it absorbed) and b) how many non-dry hits I could take from each before hitting dry. But I am way past the point of caring so much about it!
