I recieved an email this morning from the Mirror to say that they have looked at my complaint and feel that they have not breached any codes of practice. They also provided a link to the original article that has now been amended(E-cigarette health scare erupts as officials highlight "serious" cancer risk of vaping - Mirror Online) That quotes Dr Farsilinos, Which coincidentally was the exact same quote that I used in my complaint to them. I have replied to them telling them that I was not happy with the results of their investigation and I will be contacting IPSO again, as instructed by them if I was unhappy with the Mirror's response. So It's back to waiting for IPSO's response now!!!
I didn't bother complaining directly to the Mirror as it seems to me they're engaging in a smear campaign and as such, they won't be interested in anything that drags them away from their agenda.
I did a quick google search of the journo that wrote both these hatchet jobs and it seems he's got a bit of a history of negative articles about vaping.
I thought I was seeing things when I checked the article again and saw the link to Dr F.. notice that there's just a hyperlink to his website when the ANTZ have been afforded the VIP status of direct quotations in the article. This seems indicative of bias and trying to stifle the right to reply to me.
I've received an automated response from IPSO about my second complaint but had no request for clarification as yet.
I'm not holding my breath for a retraction/apology but hopefully, if the Mirror keeps getting reported for negative coverage it might make them tone things down or think twice before publishing. I complained a few times to the BBC about negative coverage and made it clear such coverage could have public health consequences and there's been little or no coverage of vaping on their news site since. Maybe they took a bit of notice or maybe they just got fed up of covering vaping. Either way, it's one less media outlet that seems to be abstaining from negativity.
Would be nice if the Mirror followed suit, voluntarily or otherwise.
