Seems it may be the thin walled barrel can deform and stick - especially if you grip it too hard without it's hat on. So try screwing in the hat and just gripping it around the hat brim to minimise the distortion.

I'm replying to myself but this idea just worked perfectly. I spent half an hour yesterday trying to unscrew the thing with pliers etc. without success and had to rewick without taking the barrel off. Today I tried using this technique and the barrel just unscrewed with no effort at all. If it works again tomorrow I shall be a very happy bunny.

I use elastic bands to give me a bit more grip. Never need a lot of pressure just need the extra grip

Quick update: Sticking the thing in the freezer for 5 minutes seems the most reliable way of getting the thing undone! Thanks dw117!

Thanks for the tip, just finished a build and sliced up my thumb on the threads trying to get that chimney off! Freezer it is next time!
