50% off in resturants

Wont tempt me to go when they want me to go. But maybe a family with kids would benefit. I`m still booked in for weekend carvery with a bit of covid on the side please.

So attempting to bribe us into putting ourselves in danger? How very Cummings.
It really doesn’t seem to matter what concessions they make does it ?

I would say this an attempt to get the economy going again.

and if you want to eat out it’s a good deal

remember you have a choice to use it or not

not for me personally I have to say - but wow - just think of what they are actually offering, I mean aside from your personal preferences on going out

Still not tempted to eat out anywhere.

Ditto mate, especially after today.

Met Lizzie in town as needed (wanted) some more coffee pods. Have a Nespresso store in John Lewis in the Victoria Centre (Big shopping centre in middle of Nottingham)... It was weird... Like something out of a Zombie film. People shuffling along, heads down, weaving about avoiding people and was about 1/4 the normal amount of people in there. Half the shops were still shut. We got stopped outside John Lewis, asked what we were buying and given hand sanitiser.

Not an experience I fancy again. First time been into centre of town since February but won't be heading back anytime soon.

Eating out means keep being interupted while eating. Is everything ok with your meal? (half way through eating it). Yes thanks (if there was a problem i would let you know). can i do anything else for you?. " yes sod off and let me finish my food, i might order a dessert if you let me eat .
Who's bloody kids are these that are banging into the table making drinks spill over.
And then you got blockers. Blockers are those selfish sods who either take a family trip and block the aisles or crowd round that item what you are looking for. Or go alone and "bump into someone they know" and end up taking half an hour to catch up before anyone else can get the ;products they are blocking access to. what's wrong with them, your final blocker is that scratchcard addict who has no money, "will you check these for me" nothing on any of em. While i am here check my euromillions tickets there's only a few, a few a few. Why are you gambling without checking the results?. Can i pay on my card?. Card gets declined. All of these things and more could be prevented if folks gave it more thoyght.

A fair point, nothing for the renters amongst this magic money tree harvest:

"Within minutes of Mr Sunak wrapping up his address to MPs in the Commons, social media was flooded with reaction such as: 'No worries if you can't pay your rent, just cop (buy) a cheeky half-priced Nando's on Monday."

The industry needs support until its, provably, safe for them to open. Not attempts to get us in, before it is so.
Granted this is cheaper for the gov. But it's a big gamble to take, with everyone else health.
I'm all for eating out. But only when it's safe to do so. And it isn't and won't be for some time.

Yes we need a working economy. But trying to force the old ways to fit, isn't a realistic way forward. We need to plan and move to an economy that will work, in the current reality. Not just in the imagination of a gov advisor.

discounts to house buyers doesn't make sense in a country with too little housing. A traunch of house building would. And that way, either by rent or sales, the gov gets its money back with profit. It would also put money into the economy. Selling houses locks it away.

Not sure where personal choice comes in. I in now way said people shouldn't be allowed to go out.

No. This so called concession isn't even remotely where we should be starting.
Maybe they think a fiver of a meal will in some way salve the up to 4 million people we will soon have, unemployed, as furlough is stopped. The vast majority of which we have no jobs to offer, in an economy that can't work, under its current strictures.

They have already given the industry (and otherS) a fair old whack of Support - they have hardly left them to rot.

by personal choice - I meant you don’t HAVE to go out and eat, you can choose not too - I suspect the majority will choose not too (me included)

They have done loads for furloughed workers and industry - the economy has to be kick started - businesses and restaurants or whatever employ and support people which is the end game - people - it makes sense to start there and the foundations of employment.

I think they know it’s likely to be a slow return, hence why offering it now.

I agree with you, but there are no long term structural changes being announced, it might be too early for the Government to have had the time to consider that aspect and formulate a long term plan, but there are glaring gaps already. Will people who are forced to use foodbanks be able to afford to go into a cafe, restaurant or pub that serves food, even when discounted? I doubt it. People, many people, many families, are spending food money topping up or paying extortionate rents, however, the landlords can take that money and go out for a lovely discounted meal. It's just one example.

Yes I get and understand that - that has to an extent always been a problem though - with what I’ve seen so far with this iteration of the current gov (which has hugely surprised me) I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will address it and other things - these last few months have all been about trying to slap on bandaids during an unprecedented crisis - I think you are right in that they have probably not had time to sort each individual area out yet. I should imagine it’s been pretty full on.

Agreed mate, apart from anything else it's artificial house price maintenance, something governments have been in love with for a long time.

one of my daughters just sent me this message:

"also why is he doing the stamp duty thing ... Is that going to help first time buyers maybe or is it the landlords .. I don’t understand why he didn’t put it into social housing or build more housing that’s affordable.. I don’t get why he did that but maybe I’m not understanding the reason"
