Is it dangerous to mix your own eliquid?

“At the end of the day, DIY e-juice just isn't worth it unless you’re very highly experienced both as a vaper and a chemist! The risks of consuming an e-liquid you’ve miscalculated are high, and can easily land you in hospital. Whether it’s the use of dangerous chemical compounds, the lack of safety protocols and procedures, unsanitary chemicals or bacteria getting into your e-liquid, cross-contamination from other vape juices or a dangerous amount of concentrated nicotine in your e-liquid, there are quite a lot of different safety risks that you’re exposing yourself to when you mix DIY e-liquids.” - https://www.buyv2cigs.co.uk/blog/will-diy-e-liquids-be-banned#:~:text=While we do recommend not,can make you very sick . One example ! I’m a complete worry wart and have anxiety. I know the obvious solution to that is to quit vaping but I also like vaping a lot

yes we should have used pure vg as we forgot to take into account the concentrate being in a pg solution- I just want to make sure I’m not going to end being killing myself trying to save £10 thanks for you input !

It's nonsense...

I would say the risks of creating an e-liquid that you've miscalculated are low and the chances of that landing you in hospital are close to zero.

... you know you could safely vape those 18/20mg nic shots on their own? A friend of mine does just that... he buys 18mg nic shots and adds a few drops of tobacco flavouring.

"the use of dangerous chemical compounds" .......like? .... the same ones you'll find in every e-liquid of that flavour

"the lack of safety protocols and procedures" .... no idea, this isn't nuclear physics

"unsanitary chemicals or bacteria getting into your e-liquid" ..... treat your vaping ingredients/mixing equipment... like you would treat your cutlery and the food you put in your mouth, it's no more complicated than that.

Thank you! Do you have to Steep it or is it just for better flavour ? We’ve vapes ours straight away

Either or... there's no danger either way.

I might leave mine over night, or a week or so depending on how much I mixed and how quickly I need it.

There's no guarantee that leaving it will improve the flavour, I've mixed plenty of recipes that were great at first but got progressively worse over time. But the taste of something is entirely personal. I'm presuming that 250ml will last a while so you'll be able to see if you like it more in a week or so.

.... some people like a super vintage mature chedder, whether that tastes better than regular 'mature' is so personal.

That article is scaremongering to discourage people mixing their own juice. I laughed at the line in it with regard to nicotine "If you are mixing your own vape juice, stick to a 60mg/ml formula or less to prevent a trip to the hospital or worse."

That said if you're that bothered then buy pre-made e-liquid.

As others have said doing what you`re doing, the worst thing that can happen is that you end up with a bottle of unvapable juice, give it all up as a bad job and go back to smoking... dont let that happen, keep a bottle of your favourite juice handy whilst you`re experimenting, the shotfills, longfills, dropshots or whatever they`re called can be very tasty.

That article is way over the top ,gloves, goggles , protective trays and isopropyl ? Wtf ?
I'm surprised it doesn't say to throw on a hi viz jacket as well.

If you are only making juice for yourself you need none of these things
If you can make a cup of tea without ending up in a&e you will be fine making juice

It's very dangerous. I know someone that lost a leg pouring their nic into a shortfill, and someone else that lost their children in Asda.

My partner and I have mixed our own eliquid for the first time. It works out a lot cheaper and seems easy, however I’ve just read a lot of stuff online about how dangerous it is and can put you in hospital so I’m freaking out a little.

we used:
Element longfill (kiwi red berry concentrate in pg solution) which came in a 250ml bottle.
We added 3 nic shots
Filled the rest of the bottle almost to the top with a 80/20 vg pg base mix.

does this sound right and is this any more harmful / unsafe than just buying the smaller bottles pre-made ?

thank you in advance !!!!

I think the only thing that can be dangerous is not buying your things from reputable sellers. Ie you don't want cheap crap flavour concentrates that are full of nasty chemicals. Also, your nicotine strength can potentially be dangerous. I use this calculator for working things out when mixing my own liquids.

I've been vaping on and off for a good few years, but recently switched to proper set ups. For sub-ohm the general advice is that you stay at or below 6mg nicotine strength. Personally I use about 9mg strength but I tried different amounts until I settled on one that works for me. Start low and work your way up. Your body will tell you what you need. For MTL vaping 20-30mg for a heavy smoker. In the US many seem to vape at like 50mg which I think is crazy. Like, that's not far off the lethal dose lol.

One place I do recommend for flavour concentrates is Dark Star - https://darkstar.co.uk/collections/darkstar®-one-shots
They're pre-mixed flavour concentrates so you don't need to mix a shit load of flavours to make one you like.

Realistically though the only real thing that can put you in hospital is a dangerous dose of nicotine. Nicotine is a toxin and is highly dangerous to humans. The lethal dose for a 70kg person is 50-60mg.

I agree with everything that has been said above.

Providing you're not doing something really random and stupid - like adding superglue to your mix - the only danger I can think of is the handling of 72mg nic concentrate. It is recommended to use gloves when dealing with 72mg nic, to avoid getting it directly on your skin, or in your mouth, though I'm not sure it would actually send you to hospital.

Even that info is well out of date though... since the TPD came into effect, 72mg is banned and the strongest nicotine mix allowed is now 18mg. But traditionally that was something to be careful of.

Yeah I use gloves when handling that strength. I think getting that on your skin and not washing it off could make you feel sick but you'll be ok if you wash it off straight away.
I thought 20mg was the upper limit? Did they recently drop that to 18mg?

EDIT: I checked. It's 20mg (2.0%) that is allowed as a max strength.
I think some shops only stock 18mg so that if they're tested they're very unlikely to be over 20mg. Whereas if something is 20mg and it's tested, they could potentially be prosecuted if it's like 20.3mg for example.
