What's new

new VAT rules for imports from 1st jan 2021

Reading this thread is putting me off of making any orders from overseas now

Same as that, I'm not even entering any overseas vendors giveaways for a while, I'll wait and see if I get stung on the Wotofo Manik Mini. If I know what the extra charges are, and I am paying them, when I place the order, then fair enough. I cant take a punt on buying anything, whether it costs a tenner or £50 or more and then being subjected to random unknown charges, many of which seem to be at best arbitrary, at worst extortionate, when based on the value of the items purchased. My gut feeling is the couriers are cashing in, virtually free cash, if you like, that's where the big scam will be, at least for a while. I have no probs with paying VAT, absolutely not.

Precisely, I have no issues paying legitimate VAT on a product or paying when I know all the costs involved beforehand, but for more to be added on after it has left the vendor with the courier they have set up and you have already paid to use (unless provided free by the vendor) is extortionate as all hell, especially when I always by default choose the option that states Custom Tax and VAT included. Next thing you know, the price of non UK goods in Supermarkets are going to go up because they claim it costs them more to import them now...I can just see this all getting way out of hand.

we’re doing the same and not order anything from overseas, just to see what happens.

tbh though, i very much doubt the little packets from fasttech and the like, which are delivered by RM, will be affected by this at all. They put a low value, so they don’t qualify for import duty. Also, firstly there’s nothing about VAT on the packaging so there’s absolutely no way they would know, at the customs border, if it’s been paid or not (as far as I can see). also, the reason they want overseas vendors to charge the VAT at the point of sale is because customs will no longer be checking packages at the border. This is in one of the articles I linked above.

So like @Mawsley ’s atmomixani parcel I expect they will sail through.

i think there are a variety of things going on at the minute, some related to brexit, some related to the change in VAT, and some probably random.

Haven't ordered anything since New Year and I doubt I'll be bothering with this shitshow going on.

Use Ali express, someone on here mentioned they charge the 20% vat and pass it on to our Gov, then you get no further charges.
Thanks very much, I would like to see more people confirm this though before I take the punt.

I just wanted to try some tanks out, that's all, now i'm stuck with tanks that are here in the UK that i'm either not interested in, cost too much, I have already used and didn't get on with or ones I already have in rotation. It's just infuriating. I know a genuine Kayfun Lite Plus is easy enough to get here in the UK but I have my reasons for not wanting to drop £90 bucks on it. I bought a brand new authentic Lite 2019 about a year or so ago and I hated it, the threading locked on the deck and chimney all the time, making the bottom fill a pain in the ass, those silicone airflow screws let condensation seep directly into my 510 and I could never get a draw that I consistently enjoyed out of it. So looking at the 2021 version, I think I would have more of a chance to enjoy it but i'm not willing to shell that kind of money out again. Plus, i'm not a guy with expensive tastes, out of choice primarily but circumstance too these days. I dress, eat, drink and so on as cheaply as I can and would prefer to vape as cheaply as possible too because so long as I spend the same or less than I did actually smoking, I can justify it. So if there are clones that offer the same vape quality as their high end counterparts and are still made well enough to last, I know where i'd rather see my money go.

(P.S. Sorry for ranting away)

They are checking packages, just like before, but like they say, they can't check them all.

All packages, no matter the size or value, are subject to the new regs, including using the correct labels and making the relevant declarations. Fasttech and the like can't just carry on as before - forever, they might get away with it for a while.

Incorrectly prepared or documented packages are all to be - theoretically, rejected and returned to sender. That's only my take on it though, I might be completely wrong.

Not sure if this is all supposed to happen the other way around too, but I had a package delivered from Ecigone today. No special labelling (just the standard big RM sticker), no extra charges to pay, didn't even have to sign for it as the postie left it inside my porch while I was out at the shops.

What date was your order placed please?

That's not a rant mate, That's a bloke being honest. I have lived similar for 30 years. I found as a youth that following brand names was why so many where moaning they where bored, the reason why, because they spent all their money on clothes and then had no money to go for a night out. Me n mates in army surplus stuff, old jeans, etc where always flush on a weekend and thus had money for whole weekenders.
Today not only do we have brand names but phrases made up to disguise the truth like "high End" it just means very expensive or overpriced but some folks want it to impress their peers. I feel the same with some vape gear, yes i will spend on a regulated Mod, but £200 for a mech or £120 for a tank, i might not even like is never happening. Always try a clone before i buy an authentic if possible. But some stuff is silly money and out of my comfort zone. Out of interest how much money did you spend on Smoking a week?.
