I splashed out on a proper meter to read and fire my coils, used it once and never bothered after that. I just stuck to using my mod.
Just make sure you turn the mod off while you're inserting your coils so you don't accidentally hit the fire button.
You should have some ceramic tweezers in your little tool kit so after you've installed your coil in the build deck they need to be bedded in by dry firing them and using the tweezers to tweek and strum them to get rid of any hotspots.
