RTA Study

I'm in the same boat as OP, only MTL tank I can find in shops is a VandyVape RTA. Doing some research before using it, I am glad to see no reports on the interwebs about mods turning into pipe bombs due to incorrect building, while it hasn't been reported, is this possible?

A more on topic question, would it matter if I built the coil off the mod then put it back on mod when I'm ready to check that it's heating properly?

Lastly, if something's not quite right with the build, will my Aegis Mini fire it?

Your Aegis Mini is a regulated mod, so yes you can use it to check that your build is ok. If there was a problem the Aegis just wouldn't fire and would display some sort of message like 'atomiser short'

This is good to know, got the tank now along with the Vandyvape build kit, ordered a Geekvape kanthal a1 24g spool, a coilmaster wire brush and jig and organic cotton. Tell me, does the coils need to be in contact with each other? It looks very tight and neat on the tutorials and I somehow doubt my first few attempts will look the same.

Dual coils shouldn't be touching each other. There should be at least a small gap between them.

Yes and no. It will only show a short message if the resistance drops below the minimum resistance the mod is set to fire. Most mods now have that set at 0.05. So you could build your coils to be 0.3 and have them touch the cap and short, dropping the resistance to 0.07, and the mod would happily keep firing.

Of course, the mod won't fire a hard short but a user should be careful when building and check the resistance stays consistent.

I switched to the RTA today, I wasn't aware that there were 2 prebuilt coils in the box so I used one of them. I'm a bit worried about the coil making contact with the 2 pins because the coil is pretty wide for the small slot. Got it as best I could in the centre and away from the pins, everything seems fine, the coil reads .7ohm on my mod, unscrewed the tank and screwed it back on just to make sure it reads the same and it does. I haven't got much on how many watts Min/max, I have it at 13W but does anyone here know where I should be with wattage? I was hoping to use a calculator but don't have dimensions of the coil.

I really am sorry for bombarding your thread OP.

@LieutenantRekt I am a low power mouth to lung vaper and my usual set up would be a 1.0 ohm coil at around 15 watts so I would imagine that 13 watts for a 0.7 ohm coil would be a bit low. Perhaps try around 18 - 20 watts and go from there.

There's really no right or wrong. It's whatever suits you. If you're at 13w turn it up 1w at a time till you're happy. If it's too much turn it back down.

I vape home made .7 to .8 coils at around 15 or 16w. A lot depends on the airflow setting and your personal draw length. Some prefer higher and some prefer lower. It's personal preference.
