I've done both, but don't squeeze the coils while they're glowing, do it as they start to cool when you release the fire button, just like we would have done in the days before ceramic tweezers...

Aren't they a no-no? Don't we need pure wires for TC?

This depends on the metals used in the alloy, in this case Nickel (Ni) and Iron (Fe), both are fine from a Resistivity point of view and their are very few effects from either metal. the "pure" bit comes from the fact that there were a few grades of nickel around that contain things that could be harmful if inhaled in the long term
