e-Cig Battery Explodes... Discussion?

I was reading earlier that there is a way to charge an Ipod using 2 bent knives and a power socket. Is it safe?

Anyways, does anyone watch the daily show? The last episode (its the one after samuel l jackson if memory serves). I was laughing at the fact CNN have spent 3 weeks making stuff up about what they think could have happened to the missing Malaysian flight. Everything from Aliens to Zombies and all said in all seriousness. They have even had some muppet reporter doing simulated flights all the time since its disappearance. The one to really make you laugh though it that they are now doing a report on the guy in the simulator. Making news by reporting on the news people who reported the news? Jon Stewart does it better, but its all the same kind of BS reporting that we are all being subjected to these days.

At the end of the day everyone's making assumptions it was the charger, but no one knows what state the actual device/battery was in. I always tell folks to treat their batteries with care & respect, no shocks, knocks or extremes of temp.
If you've ever pulled one apart you'll know just how delicate & basic the internal wires & solder connections are, if it's had a hard life & been exposed to any or all of the above it could have working on a wing & a prayer ready to go pop at any time.
If anyone remembers the last incident that was posted on facebook were a lads battery apparently spontaneously combusted in his bedroom, & the question was asked could that actually happen - possibly for the above reasons. If any of the internal connections were damaged or just dodgy, battery rolls / gets knocked off the bedside table, fire button gets hit - internal connections short - battery goes thermal, ego batteries, VV aside have little or no protection against a hard short.
Another major problem is that their so cheap & when you try telling peeps to take care of them, they tend to think in terms of financial loss, as in it won't cost much to replace if it dies, rather then the potential danger & damage of a lithium battery going thermal. Add to that the 'I bounced it off the floor & it still works, so it must be a good un' & the ever popular 'it'll never happen to me' syndrome & who knows how many more are waiting to go pop.

It seems totally manufactured event, to support banning E-cigs. We use huge 12v batteries in cars. How many have you seen exploding ?

i'm with @Maxcat , the usb adapter in use shouldn't have had anything to do with it. the charger draws what it needs, it doesn't have the full amperage forced on it by the usb plug. i use my samsung and apple usb adapters all the time for my spinner and have no problems. i have 3 ego chargers though, i only use one of them because the others don't work right imho. the light on the one i use is solid red while charging and then goes straight to a solid green once charged, the others go orange (both lights on) then flash between green and orange towards the end of charging and sometimes never go properly green and i think that's because the cutoff doesn't work. it's got to be the battery or the charger and not the usb adapter that was used. the usb adapters that come with apple and samsung gear are good quality and well protected bits of kit, i don't think people should be discouraged from using them.

More than a couple in my time, abd when they go, they really fucking go. That said though, they were not in the best condition, more "failure waiting to happen"

What your missing though is that car batteries are lead acid batteries and lithium ion cells are entirely different. They can be extremely volatile, and its much easier to cause them to fail. Over discharge a li ion cell then force it to charge and your lucky if it DOESN'T go into thermal runaway.

There are too many unknowns to give a forensic diagnosis of what happened, I'll say this though. If he was using a round cell mod of whatever cell size, I would suggest its much less likely this would have happened for a number of reasons.

That alone is the reason I've never and will never own one of the smaller ego style devices, I trust my cells and my chargers because I've personally verified they work correctly, and I regularly and randomly test to ensure they continue to function correctly.

If you like, I'm a geek, but I believe being a geek gives me less chance of an incident happening involving violent cell failure. People think ecigs are simple safe devices. They are, if you take the time to learn every facet of their function. Most don't, in which case they are as magic as penn and teller, david blane and dynamo.....
