Hi guys..
I've been vaping for 7 months. Worked my way up from a pen, to Aspire NX75, G-Priv and GX350... ( 1, 2, 4 batts)

I love vaping... It's both a hobby and a habit. I love the intricacies and detail.. But I don't get mech mods..??

Let me explain.. Because I'm a nerdy geek who loves gadgets and has an electronics background, I'm curious why people choose a non-adjustable mod over an adjustable one

I've got a degree in electronics, and history, including the MOD, in this respect..
I build gadgets and code on a regular basis.. I know ohms law intimately and understand and use lithium batts for projects and RC models..

BUT.. I don't get mech mods..?? What am I missing..??

I've heard the "instant hit" argument, but I'm still confused..!

Surely a regulated mod, of decent quality, is only going to be a couple of milliamps behind a mech, and a few milliseconds slower.. Modern transistors have incredible specs, and I can't see why you'd risk a practical short circuit across a "fragile" battery chemistry, over safety cut offs and variability of vape..?

I wouldn't dream of using an unsuitable speed controller for the Lipo's in my RC planes and cars, so why not follow that thinking with the Li-Ion batts in your hand, next to your face..

Is that couple of milli amps/seconds that precious..

Also, I presume you have to build the coils very specifically to get the required temp, fiddling around alot, when a reg mod can work around that by turning the wattage up or down a bit..

The juices I like need various wattages to work as desired.. My juices at around 75-80watts in an RBA, JustJam erupts with flavour at 140w in the V8, 220w in the V12..

I build my own coils, mix my own juice, etc, so I'm used to calculating variables and vaping heat..
I'm not just a cloud junkie

Can someone explain..??

I'm not having a go, please don't read it like that, just curious... :)

I edited this to sound more 'friendly' and not so aggressive, which after reading over, it might've sounded like..

Why would someone use a 350w mod with 4 cells in it? ;)

.. not having a go or anything but can someone explain the need...??

Lol... :) Mostly longevity... lasts 2 days.. The TFV12 works best, with my favourite juice, at 220w, and that's the G-Priv max, plus it killed the batts quickly...

Seriously tho, I'm not having a go, honestly, just curious why vape 'pro's' swear by them, when they apparently aren't as flexible as a regulated mod.. (not to mention the cost)

Because Mechs look so damned good!!

The variables that come with using a mech make life far more interesting as well. As a former Royal Navy Marine Engineer and former olde skool Land Rover owner, this appeals to me, my skill set and experiences no end. If I can't fix it with a hammer, then I'm generally not bothered about it!

Lets face it if we all liked the same kit, how bland would life be?

And, can you use your smog machine, on full yobbo settings, in the pub??? :D

It's finicky, requires coil tinkering and mod cleaning. I like the builds of the mods, the way they screw together and the machining. The fact you have to tinker the coils to get the right vape for you, but once you've tinkered enough, you know your build you know what works and there's an element of satisfaction when you nail it.

I'm a whopping geek.

I also have an electronics background, but I love mechs.

I love the simplicity of being able to use basic ohms law to calculate a build, and I love the challenge in learning to build for a satisfying vape that is optimal for my battery.

I use regulated mods most of the time, and some of them are really nice especially the DNA devices. It's just that there's something more fun and challenging about working with a mech. It is like the old school Land Rover mentality [emoji3]

Also to echo another thug that Embra said. There is nothing classier than a decent single 18650 tube mod (except the sebone, that thing looks like H R Giger designed an Alien cock). I hate lugging around a housebrick of a regulated mod with me every day.

A single 18650 has never been much of a limit for me because I build at 1-1.2 ohms generally.

Again, different strokes, different folks.

I can't +1 this hard enough [emoji14][emoji6]

It's also worth pointing out that the only reason we have things like 4 battery mods is because of coil heads being built at 0.1 ohms and the really low end of the spectrum, which is a very mech mentality that doesn't apply to regulated mods.

With a mech the only way to increase power was to change resistance so people built lower to get high power. This just doesn't apply with regulated mods. You need to think about heat flux, heat capacity and surface area instead.

So even regulated mod users are being influenced by the constraints of mechs to such a point where most people now associate low ohms == big clouds which just isn't true.

This here is a good post https://www.planetofthevapes.co.uk/...eads/it-is-not-difficult-to-understand.52508/

My main reason is convenience when I am out and about I use a Netiny genisis on an 18500 SMPL mod, nice and small.

Thanks Raptor, that link was a good read..

I like the Landrover reference, I get that..

So, in essence, a mech mod is for peeps that like the satisfaction of making a fiddly thing work right.. ?! I get that too...

Thanks for all your replies, it's appreciated... ❤
