What's new

new VAT rules for imports from 1st jan 2021

it’s hard to see how it can be policed. seems even harder than the current way with it happening at customs and we know those often slip through anyway. how would anybody know if i bought something from a place in china that wasn’t vat registered?

I think word would get out pretty easy if say the likes of fasttech were selling stuff unregistered for VAT.... why would they take the chance of losing business/fouling UK law when it's no cost them to implement UK VAT.
This to my mind makes it easier, as VAT is added at source therefore no parcels can slip through unvated

aye that’s one way to look at it. for them it means the sale price is up 20% though, which will no help business from uk, or soon eu. l think that was partly the draw of the chinese sites, no vat, and they would mark it as under £15 to avoid it at customs. ah well, good while it lasted. :)

Nah, this is exactly why I don't give everything away here, if I didn't flog a few bits to friends and family to keep things in balance I'd be out of pocket like @eyeball kid ... and then I wouldn't bother.
it's weird, you get a lot of odd jealous reactions from doing review's (very passive aggressive) but I think the majority on here do them out of the love of trying something new, writing or to try to add something to the community. Personally it certainly left me hugely out of pocket but I loved the contact and conversation with Chinese vendor's and manufacturers and the chance to offer idea's.
the review process is an absolute arse ache. Take the item apart, build coils, check tc use, build bigger coils, try low vg juice, try high vg juice, use all week to see if any issues arise when all you want to do is use your own set up with your own juice.

I experience similar when reviewing porn sites. And then factor in the toilet roll shortage this year, it was a nightmare.

There's a thing.... I wonder if a wee package will now attract a customs and handling fee as well as vat:hmm:

i think it says customs fees are only for value of £139 and above, same as now. but with this all being done at the point of sale it would seem to be planned to reduce interventions at the customs point. but who knows.

i still wonder how it will work though. let’s say fasttech decide fuck it, we’re no registering for vat. what could they do? the uk has no jurisdiction over them. they are already sending us cloned atties and dangerous sex toys. i think sellers in the eu might be most likely to obey these rules.

If its collected at point of sales won't it have to be paid before the item is sent in the case of review items?
And as theres no sale manufacturers can declare value based on manfacturing cost or whatever they want to rather than retail cost?

so i just went through purchasing an item off fasttech right up to the payment page, and no vat. interestingly it did now say something about paypal and credit card payments being disabled due to items in the cart, and directed me to buy gift certificates.
