Sorry, another newbie wire question.

So, I feel I'm almost ready to dip my feet into the world of rebuildables. I've watched the vids, read the guides etc. and picked up a cheap Aromamizer in the sales to practice my builds on.

Coil wise I'm hoping to try out a few different builds. Maybe a single coil MTL at around 1.6 / 1.8 (Is this possible on the Aromamizer??) and a dual coil around the 0.4 mark. I vape both so would be interested in trying both types.

From what I've read/seen getting some 26AWG or maybe 28AWG Kanthal A1 (or both) seems to be the way to go as a beginner, would you agree?

My question though after looking on Stealthvape is you can get normal, flat or ribbon type Kanthal. I'm presuming the normal type will be fine but what are the differences between them?

First off, it's good to hear you are getting into rebuildables- I do think they offer the best flavour, and are a lot more cost effective than stock coil tanks.

I don't think you will be able to pull off a single coil MTL build on the aromamizer, although I haven't tried this myself. You can get a single coil in between the velocity style deck aromamizers, but the airflow isn't really suited to MTL.

26G is my go to gauge for both Kanthal and SS316L. I would get a few different gauges, some smaller spools as these are fairly cheap and you can then experiment.

Normal wire is just that, rounded wire and the standard type mostly used. Ribbon is wide and thin, while flat is wide like ribbon, but also quite thick. This is nice as it gives quite a bit of surface area and works well for mech mods, although it is good for regulated mods too.

For now stick with the normal wire, unless you fancy trying out some flatwire too. I would leave the Ribbon for now unless you have some ideas for what to do with it already.

Thanks for the reply.

I was beginning to think it was a dumb question judging by the lack of answers. I kinda understood the difference in wire I guess I was trying to understand what difference it would make to the coil and the way it vaped.

In the end I just bit the bullet and ordered some 26 and 28G Kanthal. I also picked up the cleito RBA deck as I have 3 of those tanks so figured it may be worth while.

I haven't,as yet ,got around to making any coils as I decided to order the coil master kit as well which hasn't arrived yet so I have just been messing around on steam engine trying to get a feel and watching YouTube videos. Problem with that is I'm looking into claptons and all sorts. Probably not the best idea having not yet even made a single coil. Lol

No problem mate, and it wasn't a dumb question- I don't really think there are any dumb questions if you don't know the answer to them already.

Sounds good with the 28 and 26G kanthal. I started with 30, 28 and 26G.

The 30 I only used for a short time, while the 28 and 26 I preferred. I have tried down to 22G as well, but always find myself going back to 26G. For me it gives the best performance and doesn't need too much power run through it the size I make them.

The coil master kit is nice, I have separate bits to make up a kit I bought over time, I need to buy some more wire cutters though as mine snapped somehow.

Haha, definitely learn to make a standard coil first, but nothing wrong with looking into more advanced coils already. Once you have the standard coils down the more exotic coils a go.
I made my first Clapton fairly soon after starting so you probably will too. At the time I hadn't fully watched the rip trippers video I learnt from, and saw him using a guitar string as the core.

I played guitar, and had a set of strings ready to cut up and use as coils, until I realised he removed the guitar string and replaced it with kanthal lol. I have no idea why he did it this way, it would of made more sense to use the kanthal in the first place instead of the guitar string.

:D

That's the exact same video I watched. He states he uses the guitar wire first as it's a little more rigid so easier to wrap with the second wire as it doesn't move as much but I agree, surely it's easier to wrap the kanthal to start with!

It sounds like you have the aromamizer too then? Can you recommend any builds to get me going? Maybe something around the 0.5 / 0.4 mark not too high wattage.

The aim is to go between 5 and 7 wraps ideally to reach the target resistance.

As you can see, the internal diameter also makes a difference.

I'd start with a 3mm 28g 6 wrap = 1.5 ish.

The lower the guage, the lower the resistance. The lower you go the thicker the wire gets. More mass, more power required to get it going.

2 coils, half resistance. So above would give you .75

Thanks @jaimunki lovely stuff

So, changing the ID changes the number of wraps needed to obtain a certain resistance, that chart shows that clearly. Does changing the ID also change the way the coil vapes?

A length of wire will have a set resistance, no matter how many wraps/Id combination used.

Changing the Id/adding more/less wraps, adds or removes more or less wire. That's esentially what changes the resistance.

The more surface area touching the wick, the more juice gets evaporated, so in theory means more flavour.

This is where aliens and the like come in.

Lightbulb moment!

Thanks @jaimunki those last couple of posts explained it beautifully and it's finally clicked. I was getting bogged down with number of wraps, ID , wire gauge etc. and missing the obvious about wire length and surface area.

Roll on my coiling kit being delivered. I can't wait to get cracking.
You had better get ready for the next volley of questions when I can't wick the damn thing and it's pissing juice everywhere :D:D

It is alot of different info to try and absorb at once.

Re:wire guage
Obviously, a 10cm length of 28g has a different resistance to 10cm of 26g. One will heat faster than the other at the same voltage, as they have a different mass. Thinner wire heats up faster.

Don't worry about the variables too much.

Try a coil, add a wrap, loose a wrap.
Try a different Id, add a wrap loose a wrap.
Try a different awg, repeat.

Omf don't start us on cotton's ffs.
