Interesting balance of approaches. I think it's 'horses for courses'. When I am trial mixing and concocting I tend to be a bit anal about measuring and recording - which makes adaptation and modification easier. And base does impact on taste too. My first no nic chocolate was a limp squib. There arre also some flavours where balance of ingredients is a bit 'knife edge' - turkish delight - for example.
There are other flavours though (my base is always carefully measured and pre diluted) where I can afford to be a bit less precise. Caramel cream, Apple sour, Coffee Paradise or Espresso don't require absolute precision to taste good.
