Vape Tax.. we all knew it was coming

Are ex-smokers really worrying about the dangers in vaping? FFS.

I guess some of them. I'm not really but I am interested in the results of long term studies.
Going from a very dangerous thing to a less dangerous thing though doesn't necessarily mean the less dangerous thing doesn't warrant one being worried about it though.

I totally disagree with that. We haven't yet done enough research to arrive at a reasonable conclusion as to what the inhalation of VG, PG and the flavour concentrates does to us in the long term. We all know what nicotine and cigarettes do to us as it's been around for decades.
Inhaling the ingredients of eliquids has been happening for a fraction of that and as testing technology gets more advanced and as people inhale these things for longer periods it only makes sense to continue testing.
The studies are ongoing because there's a need for these studies to happen.

The professor of public health at the University of Edingburgh says this:

"E-cigarettes are a relatively new product. For this reason, there isn’t enough research into long-term use, or into their effects in people who have never smoked.

“In people who vape, the vast majority are smokers or ex-smokers. So unpicking the relationship between those two risks is really tough”. “Definitive answers about safety may still take many years to identify”.

In short, there’s a lot more to learn."

We also don't know about a potential increased risk of people who both smoke and vape. Ongoing research will give us these answers.

Maybe flavourings... and inhalation of heated flavourings in particular... but the basics (nic, pg, vg) are pretty much proven to be safe as I understand it. Open to looking at any reliable info suggesting I'm wrong though (i.e. a scientific article, not a quote from a daily fail article)

ETA I did find this, which makes points on both sides: https://respiratory-research.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12931-021-01737-5

From a quick Google search, research into the inhalation of VG & PG is limited.
Limited initial research though apparently does suggest that the inhalation of PG can increase inflammatory cells in the lungs over time. Genome-wide expression, microRNA, and mRNA test results showed that Inflammatory cell counts and cytokines were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids as being higher in those who inhaled more PG. Apparently this was a short duration study and more research is needed.

EDIT: Just started reading this, but here's a study
Toxicology of E-Cigarette Constituents - Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes - NCBI Bookshelf (nih.gov)

Also: Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol Toxicity: What is Propylene Glycol? | Environmental Medicine | ATSDR (cdc.gov)

One research paper says: "Through the randomized clinical trial of healthy never-smokers over a month, we found that an increase in urinary propylene glycol, a marker of inhalation-e-cig intake, was significantly correlated with increased inflammatory response in the lung.”.

I don't think it has been proven to be safe. Not from what I've read in the last 5mins anyway.

I see this as no more than a blatant tax grab. If there are 3 million vapers, or whatever the actual number is, that means there are 3 million fewer people regularly topping up the government's coffers with regular voluntary donations of tobacco tax. Stating that the intention is to raise the cost of vaping to discourage smoking is blatant ludicrous spin - if you want children to be healthier and to eat fruit instead of confectionary you don't raise taxes on fruit...

After all the Covid lockdowns/payments followed by the energy crisis cost of living payments that are still ongoing the coffers are basically empty. I fcn detest Tories but I can't see that any Government would be able to resist taxing vaping because it is such an easy target. Smokers will regard it as 'we pay high taxes so it's only fair vapers should pay', people who neither smoke or vape will probably regard it as a good thing as is additional revenue being paid by people who are anti-social - smoke or vape, they don't give a shit, all they know or care about is they don't want to walk through a cloud of something that has come out of someone else's gob. Which is fair enough really.

Quite frankly I'm surprised they've held out for so long, I just hope the inevitable tax they levy is restricted to nicotine only and not applied to everything else like hardware, shortfills, VG/PG, flavourings etc.

I intend to order 100 nic shots for my freezer this weekend - I won't be going for the unmentionable stronger concentration stuff as my hands shake and I know trying to use that stuff will end badly lol.

I'll just accept paying the inevitable tax when it happens, but I am concerned about the flavours question. I suck at mixing, if all I can acquire legally is tobacco, menthol or mint and have to pay a nicotine tax on it - I'll be back on the combustible stuff,

not wanting to flame this thread to the bonfire of hate it has become but you do vape yes?

We all know the dangers of nic and the dangers of breathing anything into your body there are reams and reams of peer reviewed studies done over short medium and long term dangers of vaping if you read the main news section you will see those listed

however you seem very concerned over how dangerous nicotine is may I suggest most kindly if you have concerns over nicotine that you should shy away from its use

I agree. They've spent so long trying to get less people to smoke. Now it's happened there's a deficit between the tax money gained from smokers and the outgoing funds to the NHS to treat illnesses in smokers.
I strongly believe this is about tax money.

If this kicks in I am also going to stock up on 1 litre of "the strong stuff" and 5 litres of liquids.

Mixing is easier than many think though. You can buy pre-made flavour concentrate mixes like this: Lemon Tart - One Shot — DarkStar International Limited
Then you just mix to VG/PG and add nicotine.

Oh no I'm not concerned at all. I was just answering the questions here & providing info that's all. The information I copied and pasted doesn't mean I'm concerned
The only thing that concerns me is spilling strong nicotine onto my skin or something:D

I wouldn't agree that it's become a bonfire of hate though lolol. I thought it was quite chilled and amicable?
