Well I got the batteries in, but now it won't turn on and I can't open it to get the batteries back out, so think maybe AAA would be the right answer.

Well just managed to pry it open, turns out the batteries were so tightly squeezed by the case that the springs hadn't been enough to push them forward into the positive contact. So that is that mystery solved.

checked..its AA in mine. Tight fit, but i take them out every time i fly and put them back.. knack to it...nearly threw it out the window at first but they do fit
