Children under the age of 18 will be banned from buying potentially “toxic” e-cigarettes under new laws to be announced next week.

Ministers will also make it a criminal offence for the first time for adults to buy conventional cigarettes for under-aged children, punishable with a fine of up to £2,500.

The moves come in response to concerns that growing numbers of children are taking up “e-cigarettes”, before becoming addicted to nicotine and moving on to regular smoking.

The government’s medical experts warned that there was no way to tell how damaging the new electronic vaporising devices were for young people’s health.

Officials suggested that ministers had been moved to act following anecdotal evidence that e-cigarettes were gaining in popularity, with some reports of children smoking them in class.

Mind you vendors have been doing this on their own for HOW LONG?

Age Limit incoming. (Lazy 'journalism' still abounds)

According to this recent Telegraph article there will soon be a minimum age of 18, by law, to buy e-cigs.

While this is all good, and every responsible vendor out there is already restricting sales to over 18s.

the quality of 'journalism' in the media is still infuriating.

Strike 1:

No. the Gateway Effect is a fallacy. See Clive Bates here. Worse though they already know it's rubbish and still keep repeating it.

The negative gatewa that they are all so up in arms about isn't going to happen in any significant numbers because cigarettes *taste foul*. You'll get kids rebelling and doing things that they are told not to do, this is what kids do. However in days gone by if you got addicted to smoking you had the choice of cigarettes or nothing, more or less.

If you can now get you nic fix and all the pleasures of smoking from something that doesn't smell bad, doesn't taste bad, that is easier to keep quiet about to those people you'd prefer didn't find out and is very unlikely to kill you. Which option are you going to choose? hint, most people aren't going to choose smoking tobacco.

Strike2:
The government’s medical experts warned that there was no way to tell how damaging the new electronic vaporising devices were for young people’s health
...
Professor Dame Sally Davies, the government’s chief medical officer, said: “We do not yet know the harm that e-cigarettes can cause to adults let alone to children, but we do know they are not risk free.“E-cigarettes can produce toxic chemicals and the amount of nicotine and other chemical constituents and contaminants, including vaporised flavourings, varies between products meaning they could be extremely damaging to young people’s health.”

Yes there is. To claim otherwise is wrong. Back in 2008 when all this was new then that was perhaps a fair response. Given the amount of science and published research out there on e-cigs and vaping now this is just lazy at best and flat out lying at worst. See Carl Phillips here.

STRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIKE 3 - YOUR OUT!

in response to concerns that ... Medical professionals are concerned that

Just who are these un-named people (medical professionals no less!) why should we take note of their concerns? How many of these concerned people are there?

I could write a Tweet that said I was worried about the sky falling, and anyone could read that and then legitimately note in an article that there were "concerns" that the sky might be about to fall. Does it make those concerns valid or representative?

Stop using weasel worded, ill founded, unsubstantiated "concerns" to write lazy bad copy.

</rant>

Ah well, they just have to keep buying "proper" cigarettes then.... so much better for them

the law has existed for ages, they still buy alcohol and cigarettes from the age of 14.

LOL yeah I just posted this article up in the news section.

Agree with it though, just pissed that they didnt mention more of the Ecig Vendors have self imposed this standard for YEARS

Tweeting would be a very irresponsible thing to do in those circumstances.. If you think the sky is falling down Chicken Licken, you'd better be off to see the king! No doubt, on the way, you'll bump into *takes a big breath* Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Ducky Lucky, Drakey Lakey, Goosey Loosey, Gander Lander, Turkey Lurkey *pauses for another breath and to check all are present and correct*

The 8 of you should wander aimlessly until such time as Foxy Loxy offers his assistance and leads you, licking his lips, to 'see the king' only he'll really be leading you into his lair where he, his wife and their 5 hungry fox cubs will devour you all, spitting out the feathers and crunching up the bones!

Poor Chicken Licken, never did get to see the king and tell him that the sky was falling down :(

Anyhow.. my favourite children's story aside.... I agree and concur, which are essentially one and the same, but saying it twice enforces my feelings of accord, as does nodding *nods*

My eldest son is now off the fags and sucking on a nemesis, my middle son does not either smoke or vape, my youngest son was 16 today, and also doesn't either smoke or vape, but i'd rather he took up vaping as opposed to smoking....And if there was no choice in the matter, I'd get him a supply of vape equipment and juice rather than him smoking.....

Ecigs are a gateway.

A gateway into spending shitloads of money on cool stuff and pumping money into the economy.
