Regarding cleaning stems, my old man was a real pipe smoker in his day...he would periodically spend one weekend day every month, cleaning out all his pipes...with these cotton pipe cleaners, as available from brands like Swan, Ronson etc. They could do the same job for epipe stems, maybe.

I remember when me old man clean his out.....the sight of what came out of the stem made me almost barf! Looked and smelt revolting! I'm still amazed that i took up smoking now..thinking just how much crap i inhaled from my cigarette days.....but sheesh....how much crap did my dad take in via pipe smoking i'm wondering?!

No wonder he only lived to 57...been gone 20 years now.
