UK Gov To Ban Disposables?

Now I know Vic can’t review worth a toss, but he’s reporting on the ban in England…and France :hmm: Starts at about minute 06:15:

Why ain't the cunts banning fags then ?

Now, there is a good question…

Is it the lost tax revenue? Alienating smokers from voting for them? Is vaping just an easy target, with less financial backing, and therefore less money to contribute? Is it because the Tory MPs’ servants all smoke, and they’re afraid for their welfare?

Help me out, here. I know that in the US, as part of their court settlement, the tobacco companies all pay a huge amount of money to the individual states as compensation for smoking’s health consequences. Does the UK have a similar arrangement? Is it both the tax revenues and this type of yearly payouts? It would explain a lot :hmm:

I don't think people should read the wrong things into this.

These newpaper reports suggest to me that the Gov are specifically targeting two issues. Firstly the mountain of waste from discarded single use vapes and secondly packaging and advertising aimed at children.

Regardless of what other countries are doing the UK Gov still seem to support vaping over cigarettes and it doesn't look to me as though that has changed.

Personally I'm not on TikTok and I've never seen anyone with one of those illegal vapes that are clearly shaped and packaged to appeal to kids although I've seen of few on some of the TV news reports. Perhaps some of you have seen them around. I really don't know how the Gov thinks it can tackle the sale of those things online from illegal vendors which won't be easy.

Most B&M retailers will comply with the law and will hopefully push most disposable users towards devices like the Elf Bar which require very little extra effort than a normal disposable which at least will hopefully greatly slash the waste problem.

Then it's just a case of wait and see what regulations they come up with to do with packaging and ads aimed at kids.

No, we don't have an equivalent of the Master Settlement Agreement in the UK.

Why they don't ban cigarettes (anywhere) is for a mixture of reasons, like -
Difficult to ban something that has been so entrenched in society for so long (albeit now in a much smaller minority)
Individual freedom (to take a degenerative harmful substance, but is not intoxicating)
Tax revenue

Here's another take on it that basically says it is an easy knee jerk reaction.

well aye, she would say that though, wouldn’t she? :)
Maybe because she mentioned? -
Since e-cigarettes first entered the UK market, smoking among 18 to 24-year-olds has halved, from 26 per cent in 2011 to 13 per cent in 2021. Far from being a “gateway” to smoking, the available evidence suggests the opposite – vapes overwhelmingly attract ex-smokers and those who would otherwise have smoked.
