Vape Tax.. we all knew it was coming

Back on topic, a vape tax is going to increase smoking, you don’t really need to do research to understand that imo. However, a study at Georgia State University from 2020 showed exactly that, and here’s the abstract:

The effects of traditional cigarette and e-cigarette tax rates on adult tobacco product use

afaik the onus of proof is on TV licensing.
They would need a court order to gain access to a property.
Strictly speaking, if you have the capability to receive a BBC broadcast (TV live or iPlayer) you are liable to cough up. You don’t need to have the iPlayer app installed.
Frankly, the vast majority do have that capability and the license fee gets paid because the majority of people are “honest” (ignorant of the “law”?) and don’t realise that the chances of getting done are very small.
I believe that the detector vans they used to use were ruled have no legal standing, hence they dropped them.
They work on the, not unreasonable, assumption that every property is so capable/equipped and use postal threats and maybe someone knocking on your door as the deterrent.
If enough people decided not to pay up, the BBC would be in Shit Street and they/the Government might do something to change how the BBC is funded, like making it a commercial station.

The onus of proof is upon the TV Licensing Authority, innocent until proven guilty.

It isn't the case that if you have the capability to receive a BBC broadcast, it is watching any live broadcast from any provider and/or the use of the BBC iPlayer. Every connected device has the capability to watch a live broadcast or use the iPlayer, it only becomes licenseable if you actually watch or record.

The vans were an myth put about by BBC to scare the hard of thinking into paying up. Whilst it was technically possible to "scan" and confirm someone was watching the TV, it was logistically impossible to actually do it. How many vans would they need to effectively cover every unlicensed house in the UK? Also, how long would that take?

The BBC is doomed as we know it. In 2022 400,000 households didn't renew their TV License and the amount of households that are dropping broadcast TV and the BBC is growing all the time. The BBC and other traditional broadcasters are in decline. Channel 4 has recently announced 200 job cuts due to falling advertising revenues, the BBC has lost 12% of it's viewers since 2017 and 4% in the last 12 months.

For me personally I'm really struggling to see how HMG think they are going to tax my vaping. The only thing I really spend money on is DIY ingredients for my juices. A 25% tax on £12 a month which is £3 so even if they did manage to find a way to sort it out I can't see a vape tax causing me any significant number of sleepless nights any time soon. :14:

All this crap in media etc. creates the mess! Just like when my dad used to go on and on about cannabis and other drugs, the more determined I got to try them. If I were a kid these days, the more I heard about ‘oh it’s so terrible…kids are vaping’ the more I’d want to!
Likelihood is, vaping isn’t going to cause lasting problems compared to many many things like processed foods. Sweets destroy kids teeth….no one says they should be banned!
Or do they?

Reports in the media indicate a vape duty is on the cards with a new duty to be levied on e-liquid with higher rates for products with more nicotine. Ministers fear that the relatively cheap cost of vaping means that the products are more accessible for young people and non-smokers.

It seems nobody is bothered about ex-smokers who gave up via vaping or those who still might.

As if there haven't been enough price increases recently. :(

I'm surprised it took so long tbh, vaping is such an easy target.

They dont care about anything except money.
Too much revenue lost with the amount of people switching to vaping from tobacco, so invent a new tax to get them there too.

For me the worst case scenario would be if they banned all the flavours apart from menthol and baccy, and then taxed the hell out of everything. :D

I dont mind paying a bit of tax, it beats them clearing the shelves.
