Well finally got around to starting work on a copper patina sleeve for the Zero dna clone.

First step, make the sleeve!!

1mm copper plate

Cut to the approx. Size with a jigsaw.

Sanded using a belt sander to get to the right size.

Then bent by hand using a 22mm mod to get the correct diameter. In this case a copper clone v1.

Once bent to the right shape sanded again to get final fit using belt sander.

Next step the patina....

Ok patina time.

Gave the sleeve a quick wet sand with 800 grit paper to give the surface a key.

Washed in soapy water and dried with paper towels making sure I don't touch the copper with bare hands after this (gloves help).

Applied colemans mustard using a cotton bud. Quick spray with an ammonia salt solution. Salted with regular table salt then into the fume chamber.

Will check every hour or so and respray with ammonia salt solution and re-apply salt as needed.

Looking Good Adam, interested in seeing the finished piece. :)
that group has a wealth of info and procedures and have done a few mods myself, still playing around with salt mixtures atm.

Cheers Barracuda. It'll be my first copper patina so fingers crossed.

3 hours in...

Had to put extra wires in to hang the sleeve horizontal as there was a drip line forming on the bottom edge when hung vertically.

What a waste of mustard...
Just kidding, looks.bloody awesome.

Hats off where its due fella ;)

some nice blues coming through there, have you used any other salts?

Left the sleeve in the fuming box for 11 hours. Got a bit carried away and forgot to take photos of the final unvailing. The patina didn't take as well as I thought it would. Not sure if it was the amount of salt that I'd applied or whether it needed more time.

Gave the patina a little extra colour with some red, blue & yellow alcohol ink.

Given it a couple of coats of clear. Gonna leave it to set overnight and give it a sand an a few more costs of lacquer.

Not the exact finish I wanted but happy for a first attempt.

Wasn't 100% happy with the result so gave it a bit of a Sanding and went at it again with the alcohol ink. Much happier with the colours this time.
