Hi all.

Wondered if I can get some pointers on doing my first TC build.

I've bought some ud 28 gauge ni200. Had it for about a month but not actually done a build. I've stuck mainly to getting to grips with my tanks using kanthal.

I have the following tanks

Aromomiser velocity
Subtank mini
UD bellus

I had a quick search on this forum for a TC build sticky or guide but couldn't find one. Can anyone direct me to some reading before I start - apologies if I've missed it.

I'd be using TC on either my segelei 75w or an evic mini.

Thanks in advance for any help / pointers.

Theres several ways of doing it but a straight spaced coil would be easiest, next one is to try a twisted Microcoil build like this one -

Theres lots of other Youtube tutorials out there too...

Of the tanks you mentioned, the subtank mini is probably the easiest for a Ni200 build. I used to do about 8 spaced wraps at 2.5 mm with 29 gauge and it worked well.

Rule of thumb is stay above 0.10 Ohm (can be tough with dual coils) and wick sparingly.

Thanks for advice.

Plan to give it a go today.

Just to check I dint dry fire with ni200? I can't find any info about why not. Can anyone help?

Apologies. Imagine this comes up 100's times a day

You don't want oxidation, and I've also heard that dry firing Ni makes it brittle (I've never tried it though). If your coil is nicely spaced, there is not much risk of hotspots anyway.

What I do is calibrate the coil and then fire it with temp set to 300C (it should not glow). Then wick, prime, recalibrate and vape.

Thanks for advice guys.

I had a go today. Seemed to work ok. Does taste a bit harsh.

Used 28 gauge. 8 wraps on a 2.5mm coil. Came to 0.18

Had the temp at 300 degrees with 40w

I think I have my wicking a bit wrong. Should that be harsh? Is it because I'm using to high a nic percentage?

High nic will be harsher, but 300C is high. I find my juice burns >250C and I rarely exceed 220C.

Maybe my fault for being unclear - I preheat the coil to 300C before wicking, but then I vape around 210C.

Needing high temp settings for decent vapour production usually indicates too much wick. What happens if you set lower, to 200C let's say? How does the vape change as you increase temp from there? At what point do you start getting a decent amount of vapour?

I'll give that a go..Thanks @danb.

Here's a pic of coil and wick.

Tried it at 200. Still a little harsh but getting flavour and vapour. I have to take shorter drags on the tank so I don't get the harshness.

Does that indicate it's a wicking issue?

Probably not - a wicking problem usually results in poor vapour production at 200C. How about if you go lower than 200C? At what temp setting do you start getting decent vapour?

If you have a bit of static resistance, it will make the coil fire a bit hotter than set, which may make it harsh at "normal" temp settings. If you're still getting lots of vapour at or below 170C, this is probably what's happening. If so, you can either try systematically checking and cleaning your contacts, or just roll with it and vape at a lower temp setting if the static resistance is relatively small.

Actually, you say 8 wraps at 2.5 mm and 28g is coming out at 0.18 ohm? That's too high if you're using Ni200, according to steam engine it should be close to 0.10 Ohm, so you may well have a bad connection that is causing the coil to overheat and give a harsh vape. 0.10 vs 0.18 is a massive static resistance (in relative terms).

I'd also reduce wattage a bit - I find 25W is plenty on the subtank mini, maybe a little more if your airflow is fully open, but 30W should be more than enough.
