Pubs across UK won’t re-open until Christmas

Thanks, i spent a good few years building the ideal brewery (100/80/100) 3V 100% SS/silicone/ptfe setup and then bought the 5 gallon grainfather and tbh have only used the large kit sparsely since..
 
anyone interested in starting a little homebrewing the kits available today are nothing like the boots kits of old.. and while you can go the whole hog and brew with grain you dont have to to brew a spanking beer. JIms Beer Kit hosts a grand forum of friendly knowledgable brewers

£50 should buy you all you need (bucket, airlock, kit, and sanitation/cleaning bits ) with a few bits supplemented by the kitchen and a kit brew is an hours work to kick off unlike a 5-8 hour day at the brewface with the ALL GRAIN option. recycled 500ml 1l and 2l pop bottles work when desperate for bottles i once bought 10x 2l tesco fizzy water bottles for something like 10p each i tipped the water and used the bottles for a brew nasty flimsy things but they worked, and pet bottles even the flimsy ones can hold more than enough pressure to carbonate a beer ;) ..

They're weren't bad though, not forgetting Woolworths, Whsmiths as well. We used to add things to them, try different yeasts etc, bit like making eliquid! tbh, I've forgotten how to do it all. The best home brewed I ever had was not a beer, it was my mates Parsnip wine, it was killer stuff, circa October 1987, those were the daze.

These days the better (100% lme or dme based (no white sugar..)) kits will brew you a beer thats comparable to a commercial pint. Get an all grain brew right and you can knock most commercial beers to the kerb..

the only trick to brewing is cleanliness, provide your yeast with a comfy home (right temp) full of food (the extract) and dump in a HUGE POPULATION of millions of yeast cells and they will out eat anything else that got in and do all the brewing for you..

Add a dash of patience to wait the time specified by a kit and then double that ;) and you should be a very happy chap.. if not stash it away for a month and taste again repeating til its lush ;)

Highly skilled brewers can repeatedly brew a beer thats quaffable within weeks I am not in that category and have only brewed a beer thats been lush 'green' the once.. BUt patience and a longer stash will mellow out every brew eventually..


* LME Liquid malt extract, DME dry malt extract

Interesting thanks, we used to swear by campden tablets? For heating we used to use wrap around heating belts, certainly in the winter months.

not really necessary these days as long as you jug back any flour filled cloudy runnings off from the mash tun, todays well modified grains dont need it so much when bottling the clarity management is more to do with decanting skill (all in one , once you start to pour your committed, a pause or slight tip back WILL kick up sediment and result in a cloudy pour.so if using 1 or 2l bottles GET A JUG to decant the bottle in one into ). And when kegging the last thing you want to see is a perfectly crystal clear pint, that always indicates the keg is about to run dry ;) disappointing but useful. Homebrew is a Live product akin to yougart its ment to contain yeast and in the quantities involved here yeast are tasteless Only time you need finings is if using a pin and a beer engine to draw /pull pints and then gelatine is preferable to fish bits..

I’d like to brew my own beer in the same way I like to make my own juice - which is by having an expert do it for me.
 
Pubs across the UK could remain closed until Christmas under coronavirus lockdown measures, landlords have warned. Cabinet secretary Michael Gove this weekend said that pubs and restaurants will be ‘among the last’ to see lockdown restrictions lifted in a bid to prevent a second wave of the virus hitting Britons later this year. Following the announcement, Frank Maguire from Truman’s brewery in London, told The Sun: ‘Things are looking pretty dire. At this rate it seems unlikely we will be open again before Christmas.’ He told the newspaper it would be a major blow to the industry to close for so long, particularly with the loss of football matches this summer which are ‘worth millions to the industry’.
When asked about what the country will look like when social distancing rules start to be lifted, Mr Gove told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday: ‘We have stressed that the reporting in today’s newspapers that schools will reopen on May 11, that is not true, we have not made that decision. ‘The other inference that I draw from your question, which is that areas of hospitality will be among the last to exit the lockdown – yes, that is true, they will be among the last.’ For all the latest news and updates on Coronavirus, click here. Today Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden attempted to steer away from any set dates for lockdown to ease and called the reports pubs will stay shut until Christmas ‘pure speculation’. Mr Dowden told the BBC: ‘We’re all desperate to end this lockdown. ‘But we need to do it in a sensible way because the worst thing we could possibly do is to prematurely ease the restrictions and then find a second peak, and have to go right back to square one again with potentially even more draconian measures.’
In Ireland, health minister Simon Harris yesterday warned places where people ‘can’t safely social distance’ will likely have to stay closed until coronavirus is no longer a threat. Mr Harris said that he did not see ‘how people can be in packed pubs again as long as this virus is still with us’. He told the Irish Independent: ‘I’d like to see a situation whereby our schools could come back or at least could come partially back. ‘What’s not going to come back quickly are scenarios in which we can’t safely socially distance. ‘So I can’t see how people can be in packed pubs again as long as this virus is still with us and we don’t have a vaccine or an effective treatment.’

Although I gave you a thanks for this information at lunchtime, I have been a bit busy all day, so have not had chance to comment so far.
So bit late in reply but here goes.

I can understand the governments qualms abut opening pub's again in a short time.
However there are other things to consider about the lessening of the "social distancing" situation (i hate the word lockdown, firstly because it is an American phrase, and secondly we can leave our homes) with regard to what the public would think of a situation where you could, for example, go to work, in close proximity with other people, or go to the library, get on a train to visit a friend, but you could not go to a pub. I think a lot of people would bet quite annoyed if this were to happen, and could cause disquiet among the population.
