What's new

living on the streets and covid

I set off to go walk about one night when I had my breakdown. I was picked up by the police within half an hour and they (with the wife) took me to see if I could be voluntarily sectioned...whatever it's called...but it was full at the time so we got sent away with some sage advice like 'try to think happy thoughts'. That's kinda the best Northants MH can offer these days.

Maybe if there'd been space I wouldn't have gone through the wrist slashing & overdose episodes, but I know that if I hadn't been grabbed by the police I'd have ended up back on the streets again. Well, less streets and more later-day Orwell's Down & Out in Paris and London probably.
After he got back we found out he'd been picked up twice by the police in that time. They let him go again. :(

Fk me man you have had it rough..... shame the MH services down your way don't seem to be the best...that said are you sure there is nothing down your way like this....https://www.sandyford.scot/sexual-health-services/counselling-support-service/ if you lived up this neck of the woods...it would be an option to consider.... the service they provide is brilliant.

Sadly, as has been shown, it's all too easy to fall through the cracks. :(

@Mawsley ........... I suspect you weren't after this .............. but you're getting it anyway. Sorry. :grouphug: :10:

There are limits to what they can do. They can take people to a ‘place of safety’ (hospital) but unless there’s an immediate danger to life, they can’t force them to stay there. Sometimes even then there aren’t any beds or services available, the cracks people used to fall through aren’t cracks anymore, they’re gaping great bloody holes.

No mate., we had next to nothing.The only services that are functioning are voluntary ones. The rape counselling service only accepts a couple of men a year, the religious mafia have locked down the homeless service and place a number of barriers to actually helping people. The MH service had no full-time psychiatrist outside of committal when I was ill, not one - locums would come in for ad hoc sessions, prescribe enough drugs to keep an elephant drowsy (so nobody killed themselves on their shift), and provide no continuity from previous sessions. If a charity can't fit you in you'll not get any help for a very minimum of 12 months beyond a script from the doctor. ...And that was before the Tory council bankrupted the county; we're now on a third major austerity drive.

I've lived on the streets. It was a long time ago and it's hard to say for how long , but I would guess between 4-6 months. Got a lot of stories from those times. What I can say with certainty is all kinds of people end up on the streets. A high percent are on drugs and/or have mental health issues. It's very sad to see.

Child and adolescent mental health services (camhs) down here are dire, if we cant look after the children, what chance anyone else?
