Maybe the pod is misshapen or doesn't seal properly, I'd replace it.

i think this seems the most likely cause. the coils are pretty good and have never leaked or gurgled for me after a couple of months of daily use.

I think so too.... because of the spitting and leaking, it sounds like the coil is continually flooding to me. It's only a combination of a partial vacuum and a little bit of cotton stopping it just pouring out.
