Mask exemptions

I think it's absurd for the government to be telling people what to do.

It should be an agreement between the shop owner and people that wish to enter the shop, the government can keep out of it.

Nice to see you Zou. :)

Good to see you too, I hope all’s well with you.

Well, I think governments exist to tell people what to do, to a greater or lesser degree. Especially in a time of emergency. To me this is just like the lockdown, when they attempted a voluntary lockdown and many ignored it. Possibly the same will happen with this, and they will capitulate, if too many people ignore their advice.

“You need to wear a mask, but you don’t need to” is quite a confusing message, i think.

It’s definitely not the first confusing message and I doubt it will be the last.

maybe, it's better than saying "nah, it's fine don't wear a mask" though isn't it?

and "You must wear a mask every time you leave the house" is unenforceable and not really necessary in a lot of situations.

They are hoping people take a sensible approach and cover their face when it seems appropriate. Pubs are open, you can't drink with a mask on can you?

aye, i get you. i think a lot of people believe the pubs opening so early was a bad mistake, though. they aren’t open here yet (just beer gardens) but i think they are due to soon (walked past a few the last couple of days that have the boards off the windows and looked as though they are getting ready to open).

Like I said above, people like me, who haven’t been wearing masks in shops, will now wear them (here, at least). speaking for where i live, that’s a lot of people. most people hadn’t been wearing masks, from what i could see.

a lot of it doesn’t make sense to me. the timing. “hairdressers can open on thursday, but nail bars and beauty salons can’t. they need to wait until a week next monday” etc.

Yeah, I get ya.... to be honest I've been been hunkered down and not really worrying too much about what the gov is saying or what others are doing. I guess it makes some sense to be opening things gradually than all at once., just in case it does create bigger spikes than expected. ... I dunno I'm just tired of it all really. Can't believe we are half way through July already.

Interesting the way this thread has evolved / developed.
Not that that is a bad thing in my opinion, but interesting all the same.
The OP @Social Misfit asked how he could be sure that he would be taken seriously in a shop if he said he could not wear a mask.
It iterations since gone through several iterations, how to make this possible, on to the different rules with the devolved governments, how the uk government has handled things, confusion over why now / why not in pubs, etc, etc, etc.
The thing that had me chuckle most is the opinions on the uk government giving out mixed messages like wear a mask, but you don't have to.
Here's one I will throw into the mix then.
Scotland, it is now law to wear a mask in shops, but not elsewhere, so you can put on a mask as you go into a shop, and when you leave rip it off.
I think we could learn a lot from this, as the Scottish government, and it's medical / science advisors must have knowledge that you can only catch covid in a supermarket........:18:

I understand what u mean, when i go out i wear sunglasses for my eyes and an actual n95 mask (its actually more than an n95) and it is hot and uncomfortable but people like to see it especially without the valve. The one trick i have learned is grow facial hair, aspecially a goatee. It will allow air to flow in and out the sides. It is still a little more protective than those paper masks but not as hard to breath in as an n95.

i guess a bandana worn cowboy style or something like that would slightly obstruct your breathing a bit, but i mean, versus the alternative of catching the thing, i would be much more worried about that.

Fear is in the eye of the beholder, I have one of these t-shirts somewhere.
